NEVER BE THE ONE
written by Milo Black
"Of course I'm happy for you".
I'm too far down my chosen road
To turn around and show you all the things I can't reveal.
We've grown together so long.
You know what I will say before
my lips have formed the words but what I feel inside you'll never hear.
I know I'll never be the one you look at in that way
The way you look at her, when your eyes shine.
I'd give it all away for just one chance to be with you
But I'll never be the one, I'll never be the one.
"I wish you all the best".
You'll never know the times I dreamed
you'd say to me the simple words you say to her each day.
I've always been your best friend.
I wanted something more, but now
the chance has gone. You never knew the things I couldn't say to you.
"Of course I'll be alright".
I'll go and break some cups and then
I'll cry until I feel less empty, less like giving in.
I have no right to feel this way.
I always knew that you would go
and leave me lonely, weeping for what might have been but never was.
This was a lyric waiting for some music for a while, until we decided to do it as a rocker. There's a lot of barely-suppressed anger in the lyric, which hopefully comes out in the music too.
Milo says "Kim's song "A Place For Me" (lyric by Jeremiah Gilbert) explores the gentle and resigned hopelessness of unrequited love, and listening to that song got me thinking - dig a little, and you'll find anger and frustration down in there somewhere too. In this case, our heroine knows that she's looking at the end of her secret dream, and behind her brave face is the resentment which she knows is wrong, and can never express, but still can't help feeling."
