The full text on this monument is "THE FREEDOM TREE with the vision of universal freedom for all mankind, this tree is dedicated to prisoners of war and missing in action from Texas 1973."

i like that idea a lot. planting a tree to mark a momentous or emotional occasion has always appealed to me. dedicating one would work just the same i guess for me.

when jerry garcia died i was cutting wood and one of the trees i was going to cut was a small willow next to a stream. as i was getting ready to hack it down i remembered that one of the last songs jerry sang had the lyric:
gonna plant a weeping willow...on the banks of a stream it will grow grow grow.

that made me not cut it down and it's still there today. i think of that every time i see it. unfortunately the state may cut it down this summer when they move the stream for a road.
