Yay! Movies!MovieThe Cell
I was glad to see Vince Vaughn play a character who's not a jerk. Unfortunately, he's a better actor when he's playing a jerk. Jennifer Lopez was good. I didn't think Lopez and Vaughn had any chemistry. At the end, I think there was supposed to be some sexual tension, but I didn't feel it.
I liked the movie, though. Lopez is part of a research project where she can project herself inside someone else's head. They've been working with a kid in a schizophrenic coma. Then a kidnapper/murderer played by Vincent D'Onofrio gets caught. Just before he's caught, he goes into a schizophrenic coma. He's got a girl stashed away somewhere in a cell that's going to be automatically flooded in a matter of hours if they don't find her. So Lopez is called in to enter his mind and see if she can find out where the girl is.
The imagery when she enters someone's mind is fantastic. I usually don't like that stuff, but for some reason I liked it in this movie. Usually I get impatient when there's a lot of time-killing imagery shots, but I enjoyed it. Some of the imagery was evil, though, and that was uncomfortable (like it was supposed to be). One scene in the serial killer's mind involving a horse was particularly disturbing. Lopez gets stuck in D'Onofrio's mind, and Vaughn has to go in to help her. One thing that bothered me... the detective work he did while in D'Onofrio's mind could have just as easily been done outside of it. An element I always like in this kind of movie is seeing the innocent side of an evil person. You get to see the serial killer's innocent child self. Lopez works to help that child.
