I have to admit, I love this movie. I super loved it back in the mid to late eighties when it came out, cause me and my friends (all of us sophmores) were thinking to ourselves; "Is this going to be us in a couple years?" Whenever I hear any of the music from this movie I think about highschool.

Woohoo! WHATEVA WHATEVA! This might be the single greatest artistic achievement of all time. thumb "There is the brink of insanity and then there is the abyss" - and I fear that those who give a bad review to this movie may have already plummeted into said abyss. Shake Admittedly, the Kirbo/Dale Beaverman subplot is subpar rolleyes but Rob Lowe's spirited proclamation of "LET'S ROCK!" makes up for this completely. Love

St. Elmo's Fire

I soooo do not relate to any of the characters in this movie. I remember when it first came out, it was supposed to be the Breakfast Club of the twenty-somethings. So being the biggest Breakfast Club fan of all time, I convinced myself that I liked this movie. But watching it again now, I'm not sure what I liked about it. Maybe just the familiarity of the actors. The only reason I like it now is for the nostalgia factor. Even back when I saw it the first time, I hated that scene where Ally Sheedy and Andrew McCarthy started going at it. Not romantic. Not sexy. More like frantic and clumsy. Of course, real life can be frantic and clumsy like that, too. laugh

But I just didn't *get* any of the characters.

Demi Moore dying step mom, dad who makes her think he hates her, drugs, money problems, and a compulsive liar.

Emilio Estevez guy who obsesses over a girl who is obviously not interested and goes out of his way to try to impress her and all of a sudden is over her when he steals a kiss.

Ally Sheedy I don't think she was really about much. More like other characters were about her. Except at the end when she gets independent. That was cool.

Judd Nelson compulsive cheating democrat turned republican who thinks getting married will change his ways.

Andrew McCarthy guy who hangs around with a couple and is a friend to the cheating boyfriend all the while being in love with the girlfriend.

Rob Lowe Um... he was way screwed up.

Mare Winningham liberal virgin in love with the way screwed up guy despite that he's, um, way screwed up.

All that said... there probably aren't many movies where I can relate to the characters, but I still like the movies. So I guess that's not a valid reason not to like this movie. Maybe I don't like this movie because I just didn't care what happened to any of those characters. Except maybe Mare Winningham. She had a good heart. But for the rest of them? Pfffft!
