It was thoroughly panned by most critics but I liked it, too. I htink the plan needed some work, though. They lost more people than dragons. I agree about the dragons. They were excellent.

True... not a very good plan. I think it's a stretch to believe there was only one male dragon, too. But that left it open for a sequel if they so choose.

Reign of Fire

Dragons! Not your garden variety cute and cuddly dragons, either. Dragons that destroy everything in their path. The description said this movie takes place in post-apocalyptic London, but it starts in regular London. The apocalypse begins when dragons are discovered by a boy in a mine shaft. The dragons get loose and, as the title describes, begin their reign of fire. Somehow the leaders of countries thought it might help to set off nuclear weapons to destroy them. Thus, between the dragons and the nukes we have the apocalypse. Christian Bale is the boy grown up. He's leading a group of people who have survived and is keeping them hidden from the dragons. I believe the thought is to outlast the dragons. It is believed the dragons went underground originally to let the earth replenish itself after they destroyed everything.

There's a charming scene where Bale and another man act out a story about knights in front of a group of children. It's not long before you realize the white knight is Luke Skywalker and the black knight is Darth Vadar. Then the children call for another story. One child wants to hear "The Lion King." I think another calls out for "Shaft." It's a nice way to remind the viewer that this is a story from our own world... not some made up fantasy world. The men won't go for another story, though... they lead the children in prayer:

What do we do when we wake?
Keep both eyes on the sky.
What do we do when we sleep?
Keep one eye on the sky.
What do we do when we see them?
Dig hard, dig deep, run for shelter and never look back

A gruff, bald Matthew McConaughey shows up with a small crew of dragon slayers. Later the strategy shifts from lying low and outlasting the dragons to destroying them.

I liked the movie. The dragons are very well done.
