What's with Jane Campion and movies where women want to have sex with Harvey Keitel? In a word... ick.
Kate Winslet is a girl who goes to India and joins a cult. Harvey Keitel is the man hired to break her spirit and turn her from the cult. This movie has it's moments, but those moments go painfully astray. There are some goofy characters that keep things light (like the mom and her asthma inhaler and the nutty sister-in-law). Winslet's character doesn't act weird like I expected a cult member to act. Maybe that's my bias from prior cult break-out movies I've seen.
In the end, I couldn't relate to whatever the heck happened between Winslet and Keitel. I think I needed to understand or embrace or feel *something* positive for their relationship to like the movie.
I'd like to see a Jane Campion movie that doesn't have Harvey Keitel in it. Then I'll know if my distaste is about Campion or Keitel.
