That's Kubrick for ya, quirky all over ...

Oh yeah, I'm reminded of a joke: Jay Leno once said that they made a movie of Dan Quayle's Vietnam era experiences: "Full Dinner Jacket" ...laugh

I liked FMJ a lot. That and Clockwork Orange are probably the only Kubrik movies I ever liked. I just didn't get his other films (Films like Eyes Wide Shut and 2001: A Space Odyssey). I don't really get Tarantino movies either but they're a lot more fun. Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction are both a hoot.

I loved Clockwork Orange (as deranged as it was!). I never *got* 2001: A Space Odyssey, and never saw Eyes Wide Shut. I hated The Shining, but that was because I didn't like Nicholson in it. I guess maybe people either love Kubrik or hate Kubrik. Maybe that's the mark of a good artist?

Probably so. I have the same problem with Scorcese and Altman, but not Spielberg. I'm a big movie fan.

I thought the flick had many very diverse
emotional and psychological epiphanies.
The boot camp layer of first half intro.
was excruciatingly real.Being an EX-MARINE
myself, I thought it to be as close to real
as the crack that emanates from my backside.
Women were quite sleasy around large numbers
of military personel at that time.
As for the slow motion sequences at the end,
excellent movie making. Even though it was
one of our own that was getting ripped to
shreds!!!

I totally don't agree with you. It was one of the best movies I've ever seen.

The boot camp portion was character development.

Thanks very much, Chris. smile

Thanks, J.T. Exactly... it's hard to get to know a character very well when he's being humiliated like that. Just not enough character development to make it a rich movie, in my opinion. I would have liked to see more of the characters before they went into the army. Perhaps in flashback.

I thought that I had seen this before, but I had only seen the end. I usually like war movies like this; however, this one wasn't as rich as most. I think maybe it's because there wasn't much character development. I didn't enjoy the boot camp portion of the movie at all. It was interesting (and disturbing) to watch Vincent D'Onofrio go nuts, though. It pissed me off when the other marines beat him with the soap.

I thought the Vietnamese prostitute scenes were pretty scummy, both from the perspective of a woman being that way and that the men got into it. But whatever... to each their own. It sure didn't add to the already unrich movie experience.

My favorite quote is from Joker, a journalist...

I wanted to see exotic Vietnam, the jewel of Southeast Asia. I wanted to meet interesting and stimulating people of an ancient culture... and kill them. I wanted to be the first kid on my block to get a confirmed kill.
That's the kind of quirkiness I like in a movie.

If you don't agree with me, I'd love to hear your opinion of the movie. As always, though, insulting me for my opinion is not welcome. I reserve the right to edit your comments if you do.
