Gladiators, socializing and my back [08/05/08]

[Just Some Stuff]

  • My coworker's daughter Ally won American Gladiators last night! I saw her dad in the audience cheering like crazy. They shot the show back in May, so he had to keep the results a secret all this time.
  • I was supposed to go to a happy hour/dinner thing tonight, but I wasn't feeling good. The truth is, I never feel like going to things like that after work. I just want to come home and relax and have some time to myself. I feel bad, though, because I told the lady who invited me that I'd come. I wasn't true to my word.
  • My back has been bothering me. It hurts sometimes, but mostly it just feels like something is out of place right above my right hip. It's sore when I stretch it, and sometimes something pops in or out of place. Tonight, the muscles around that hip are tight, and I can't relax them. I ordered some Yoga for back DVDs. I hope that helps.

Salads, Ripley and American Gladiators [07/26/08]

[Just Some Stuff]

American Gladiator Contestant Ally Davidson
  • I saw a Jack in the Box truck that said, "Forget diamonds. Salads are a girl's best friend." I guess they were advertising their salads, but I was offended by the statement. Maybe salad is a weight-obsessed girl's best friend. Salad is certainly not my best friend. But then, neither are diamonds. I can't really pick a best inanimate friend.
  • The vet finally called me back about Ripley's urinalysis results. He couldn't pinpoint why Rip's bladder got blocked last week, so he couldn't recommend a way to prevent it. I don't like that answer. Surely there's something I can do. When I pumped him a bit, he did say canned cat food would be better than dry to help keep him hydrated. So I'll try that. Internet research said canned was better, too. It's a little more trouble, but both Rip and Orion will like the treat.
  • My coworker's daughter and her newlywed husband are in the semifinals of American Gladiator. Ally competed last Monday, and she kicked butt! Her husband Jeff will be competing this Monday, I believe. They call her the "runaway bride" because she tried out for the show on her wedding day. She currently holds the woman's record for the fastest time on The Eliminator obstacle course that they do at the end of the show. Go Ally!!
  • What's Mr. Donahue getting at with this cherry pie tweet. Is it something naughty? If the answer is yes, I'm okay with not knowing the details.
With the image of Ally in this entry, it kinda looks like one of Muckdog's blog entries.

New Skin, Vacation Pictures, Starbucks, MT, and Cell Phone Stuff [07/06/08]

[Just Some Stuff]

  • I created a new skin for my Web site. It will forever be called the "Hotel Grim skim" due to a typo that stuck. It's based on the Hotel Grim in Texarkana which fascinated me on my recent trip there. My BFF Shann suggested I make it and use a grayscale scheme. I spent most of the day yesterday working on it. Creating a skin always takes far longer than I anticipate. This one did because I've never used a graphic background before and had to make sure all the words on all the pages had a solid background to be readable. More pictures of the hotel will be available when I get my vacation pictures done.
  • Speaking of vacation pictures, that's what I worked on all day Friday. There's still a lot more to do, but it's begun!
  • My biggest complaint about Starbucks (which is only a small one, really, since I'm completely addicted to the place) has been that they don't offer free wi-fi. Now they've come up with a deal with ATT to give registered Starbucks card users one session of up to 2 hours of free wi-fi per day. I went to Starbucks today to see if it works, and it does. Yay!
  • For Movabletype Geeks: This morning, I spent a while clearing out my Movabletype activity log and MT Blacklist databases. They had gotten so large from comment spam attacks that I was getting a server error when I tried to view them. I had to go into the actual database and delete records. The good news is that the spam attack defenses I have in place work so well that I wasn't even aware they were happening (that's why the log got so large). Just since I cleared the logs this morning, I've gotten 7-14 spam hits per hour. I think I probably need to close comments on my old blogs and change the URL for making comments. That'll fool them for a while.
  • More for Movabletype Geeks: I'm still using MT 3.16. I hate upgrading. I'm starting to be afraid that something will break, though, and I won't be able to get any support.
  • I tried two cell phone related services this weekend. YouMail and TreasureMyText. Both look cool. Neither work with my phone. I is very disappointed. But I'm not going to spend more money on a phone just to use those services.

Hi, It's been a while [05/10/08]

[Just Some Stuff]

  • My air conditioner is dead. The home warranty is supposed to cover replacement, but I'm still waiting to hear. I thought being without air conditioning would be a lot worse. I'm hot, but it's bothering Lily dawg more than me. She woke me up with her panting a few times last night.
  • I was poking around my Web hosting company's Web site, and I saw that they've changed their array of services. They're offering a lot more functionality to new customers for the amount that I'm paying. I asked if they would upgrade me, and they did. I have unlimited bandwidth now! And I can have up to 30 different Web sites on one account. Not that I could keep up with 30 different Web sites, but I could have them if I wanted!
  • I'm working on one new Web site now. That's all I have to say about that.
  • It's hard to do housework when there's no air conditioning. Once you work up a sweat, you don't lose it. I guess I could drive around... my car has great air conditioning.
  • I went to Madam Mam's for lunch. I had a dish with crunchy green beans, chicken, shredded coconut and peanuts with coconut cream on top. It was surrounded by sliced boiled egg and sitting in some lime and thai pepper sauce. I think it also had crack in it because I want to go back for more now.

Just Some Stuff - Safety Deposit Box, House and the 4th of July [07/04/07]

[Just Some Stuff]

  • I feel all growed up today. I rented a safety deposit box and put valuable jewelry and papers in there.
  • I also moved things into my new house. Did I forget to mention that I bought a house? Yippee!
  • My new house has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a two car garage, and a master bathroom sink that looks like a bowl sitting on the countertop.
  • I took my little Papoose guitar over there and walked through the rooms playing and singing. I thought filling the place with music would be a good start to my new life there.
  • I hope everyone has a rockin' 4th of July.

I Jinxed Gina, Juggled and Jet Skiied [04/04/07]

[Just Some Stuff]

  • American Idol: Sorry, Gina Glocksen. I didn't mean to jinx you by posting about you last night. Haley should have gone home. I guess legs get more votes than smiles. Not from me. I like a great smile over legs any day.
  • I'm participating in the Texas Roundup. Participants log minutes of exercise or other activities. Usually, I log 20 to 60 minutes of walking per day. It's also set up to log juggling and house work. I had 5 minutes of juggling today.
  • I didn't really jet ski as the title suggests. I'm just pretending to be more adventurous. I need to learn not to be so stuffy.

Redbud, Lunchtime and Neko Case [03/02/07]

[Just Some Stuff]

  • My redbud is beginning to bloom. Spring always gets here faster than I expect, but I'm definitely not complaining.
  • There was no lunchtime mishap yesterday (or today, even). Whew. I feared it would come in threes.
  • Neko Case = fantastic. I'm also enjoying Calexico. I like how they have bloggy websites.

New Bosses, Taxes and Dead Birds [01/08/07]

[Just Some Stuff]

Please may I keep my blogging club card? [08/09/06]

[Food | Just Some Stuff | Movies and TV | Music - Other People's]

Just some stuff:
  • I went to Mandola's Italian Kitchen for lunch (first time). I was reading the menu and thought some pesto pasta sounded delicious. Then I thought, "I'd rather get something with meat." I continued to read the menu and finally settled on Eggplant Parmesan. I'm glad no one was holding me accountable for that previous thought about meat. I forgot it about two seconds after I thought it.
  • I recommend the Denver Post's "Lyrics Undercover" podcast. Each one is short (less than 10 minutes), and as the site says, "each week Brian gives us ... a podcast that looks behind the words of well-known songs." You don't have to have an iPod to listen. Just download the MP3 file and listen on your computer if you want.
  • I also recommend the FX series "30 Days." It's from the guy who did Super Size Me. Each show, Morgan Spurlock or someone else spends 30 Days experiencing something new to them. The one I watched last night had a guy who was laid off from his job due to outsourcing to India go to India and get a job. He got to see how the "new" jobs there are affecting the people of India.

Just Some Stuff - Ripley, Big Brother and TV [05/22/06]

[Just Some Stuff]

  • Wow... I haven't posted on my blog in so long that all the entries fell off today.
  • I got another cat. His name is Ripley, and he came to live on my porch a while back with the other porch kitties. He got sick a couple weeks ago, so I took him to the vet and claimed him for my own. I'll post a picture of him in the future.
  • That proposition I voted on last week that required the City of Austin to post emails and phone calls between private citizens and council members to the internet in real time didn't pass. Yay!
  • I already miss Elliot from American Idol. I didn't like him much until recently. I sure would have liked to see him and Taylor in the final. I don't really care who would have won, either. I just hope Taylor beats Kathryn.
  • Two hour season finale of 24 tonight. I'll be in front of my TV cheering on Jack and Chloe.

Just Some Stuff including Beth Orton (who knew?) [04/28/06]

[Just Some Stuff]

  • I really like Beth Orton. How come I only just discovered her?
  • Two weeks ago on a Friday, I went to the Apple Store to buy a new iPod. I had a $50 off thing from a class action lawsuit about batteries. They told me I'd have to order online to use it. Poop. So I ordered online and got it by Monday. It was even engraved ("Yay! iPod!" what else?). I was terribly impressed. Until the click wheel broke, and I couldn't control it anymore. So I sent it back to Apple, and I'm waiting for them to send me another new one. I'm not impressed anymore.
  • I went to the spa today for a massage, haircut, lunch, manicure and pedicure. It was a great way to spend my birthday.
  • Don't you hate it when public restrooms serve you toilet paper rolls that won't roll? You either get one square at a time, or you have to unwrap the paper manually from the roll.
