Dream Journal [09/27/05]
[Dream Journal]
I dreamed I was at a shopping center. I didn't have a shirt on, and I was having to cover my chest with my arms and hands. I got behind a concrete barrier, but people could still see me. There were guys playing football. When one guy saw me, he threw the football to me. I think it was my choir director's son, Rob Land. I also saw a guy who used to live down the street from me when I was a kid, Mike Rogan. I caught it. Instead of passing it back, I bounced it. Surprisingly, it went exactly where I wanted it to go. Another guy threw me the ball. I bounced it back again.
I left that area and decided to go to my car. I walked out of the shopping center. People were looking at me. As I was going up some stairs, a guy was riding down them on a motorcycle. He had dark hair and a dark mustache like Tom Selleck (who I don't find attractive). When I got to the top of the stairs, he was following me. He was staring at my chest and kept trying to grab me. I started yelling, "Help." I saw a girl, and was calling for her to help me, but she just smiled at me.
I must have gotten away because I was looking for my car. In the parking lot, there was a train. It was like it was Christmas time, and they had set up a train for the kids.
I had Lilydawg with me, and I was trying to put something in the trunk of my car. The trunk was full. I noticed Lily had wandered. She was in the street, and cars were zooming past. I was afraid she would get hit. Next she was up on a car's engine. I picked her up. I didn't know how I was going to load my car and hold her at the same time.
I was going back into a building, this time with a shirt on. I was holding a red pizza delivery bag. A man walked up, trying to get into the bag. I told him if he would come with me, I would share.
We sat at a table, and I opened the bag. There was a sandwich in there. I tore it in half and gave him half. He had glasses and thinning hair and was wearing a work uniform. Somehow, I knew he was married. I asked his name. He told me in a thick accent, but I couldn't understand, so I asked him to repeat. I was thinking Leonard, but it was more like "Engard." I asked him to spell it, but then I was distracted by a bustle of activity around us.
Young people were gathering around, but acting like they were doing other things. I could tell they were plotting some joke against me. Then they started joking with me. I don't know what they were doing except one had a bottle of chocolate syrup, trying to squirt it at me. I got the bottle away, and started squirting them. They scattered.
I had to leave the table. I think I was chasing someone, still playing the game. Then I remembered my purse was at the table. I looked, and someone was trying to steal my stuff. I saw her run off with my stack of 45s. I chased after her. She was at an outdoor flea market selling my vinyl albums. She had also stolen a lot of my photographs. I was gathering them up and asking aloud, "Why would you steal my photographs?" I remembered I'd left my purse and the table and was hoping no one was stealing my wallet.
My Step Niece is fine [09/24/05]
[Hurricane Rita]
My step niece called early this morning to say she is fine. She rode out the storm in Houston. Whew!
We're just chillin' out here in Austin. The Mayor of Houston is telling people not to go back yet.
Lovely Rita, Go Away [09/23/05]
[Hurricane Rita]
Three of my family are here and safe. My step niece and her baby boy are in Friendswood, TX, and might not leave. I worry about them.
It took my brother 27 hours to drive from Clear Lake to Austin. It usually takes less than 3.5 hours. They've got their truck full of computers and pictures and hierlooms... as much as they could fit.
It looks like we won't be getting much out of Rita here in Austin. They're only predicting a 40% chance of rain on Saturday. I want to say "thank goodness," but I know that just means someone else further east is getting much worse than we would have gotten.
Rita's on the Way [09/21/05]
[Hurricane Rita]
Hurricane Rita's on her way. So are my brother, his wife and stepson. They're evacuating their home in Houston near the coast.
The prediction is that Rita will be a Category 1 (minimal damage) storm when she gets to me. People cleared out most of the bread and water by the time I got to the store tonight. I forgot batteries. I need more D batteries for my flashlight. I have lots of C batteries for my little TV/radio. Hopefully, I can find some tomorrow.
I'm not so worried about us in Austin. I worry about my friends' and family's homes in Houston, though. Please give a little prayer or send some good vibes that way.
More about hurricanes over at Rob's blog.

Dream Journal: Bad Chicken, Good Chicken [09/17/05]
[Dream Journal]
I was cooking chicken. The people who provided the chicken only gave me bad pieces, though. I complained. Then they gave me a whole chicken and a bunch of thigh pieces. It was great!
Later I was telling one of the section managers I work with (Pat) a story about when I was cooking the chicken earlier. We were at a gathering. I started the story by telling her that the people who provided the chicken only gave me bad pieces of chicken. I was going to tell her more, but she immediately went over to the people and started giving them a hard time in a joking way. I tried to get her to stop because they had given me the best chicken after I said something, but she wouldn't listen. I was very embarrassed because it made it seem like I was only telling people about the bad chicken.
I must have gotten loud or upset because I got in trouble with the division manager over it. I tried to explain things to the division manager, but no matter what I said, I got in more trouble.
I felt helpless. I don't like these kinds of dreams.
Surf n Turf, Project, Citibank, and Communication [09/14/05]
[Just Some Stuff]
- Dinner: Surf and Turf. T-bone Steak and three Garlic Mojo Shrimp from Whole Foods.
- My team's project at work goes live Monday morning. Wish us luck.
- I cancelled my Citibank credit card the other day. If you've been reading a while, you might remember me complaining about all the Citicrap they send me in the mail. I tried twice to get them to stop, but I only got empty promises. The guy asked me why I was cancelling the card. I said, "I'm simplifying my life." He didn't give me any flack and promptly cancelled the card. I'll bet I still get Citicrap in the mail.
- At the communication class I took a couple months ago, the instructor talked about introverts. He said introverts are more comfortable with written communication because they can edit a lot before they send. He said introverts are fearful of being judged by what they say. That's me. I fear being judged.
- Dinner was great. Steak always makes me feel some better. Maybe I'm deficient in something.

100s of LPs to MP3 [09/08/05]
[43 Things | Music]
I have 100s of LPs that I collected when I was a teenager and into my 20s. I want to digitize them and get rid of my turntable. Then I could get a smaller stereo system to replace the behemoth I have now. Not to mention reclaiming the space the LPs take up.
This is a major project, though. I don't have all my CDs ripped to MP3 yet. I probably need to finish that first and several other of my 43 Things.
On a slightly unrelated note... What was the first CD you bought?
I think my first CD was Boston's Boston because I thought it would sound awesome on CD. Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was an early CD purchase, too.

Sports Memories [09/08/05]
[Sports]
Note: This is a recycled entry from July, 2005. I remembered another memorable moment.
I'm doing this sports meme completely from my spotty memory since it's about memorable sports moments. Found at Sheila's through Rob.
- That time that Arizona State beat Nebraska 19-0. Na Na Na... 19-0!!!
- Later that year when Texas beat Nebraska. Twice, I think. Once in regular season and once for the Big XII Championship. I could be wrong. That's my memory, though, and I'm sticking to it. [I'm told by Irish Bruce that they didn't beat Nebraska twice in one year. Meh.]
- That time when the Titans almost won the Super Bowl because they had a weird sideways pass that got them just short of the goal line in the last few seconds, but then they didn't get it over the line. I think it was the Super Bowl. And maybe they were the Oilers back then. It wasn't a happy memory, and I don't remember who they were playing.
- The pass (if you can call it that) Chris Simms threw against Oklahoma that looked more like he saw a booger on the ball and wanted to get it away from him as quickly as possible. Not a happy memory.
- That time Arizona State was playing in the Rose Bowl and Jake Plummer did his magic to put them ahead in the last minute or so of the game. Then Joe Germaine and David Boston ruined it with their own magic. Not a happy memory.
- When Ricky Williams broke the NCAA rushing record. I cried.
- When the Houston Texans beat the Dallas Cowboys in their first game ever. YEAH!!!
That's all the memories I can summon this Thursday morning. I think I remember Phil Mikelson winning a big golf tournament once, but since I can't flesh it out, I'll let that one go. And now he's won two big ones!
Prayer To St. Peter - Edwin McCain [09/04/05]
[Favorite Songs]
I don't always hear lyrics when I listen to a song for the first time. Being a visual learner, it takes some time for lyrics to sink in. I'll hear bits and pieces clearly--a few lines that stick out. But rarely hear the whole song. Sometimes, when I finally do, it makes me cry. This is one of those songs. It's a song I'll listen to over and over. Most crying songs are like that. I don't know why I love songs and movies and books that make me cry. Maybe it's a safe way to feel real feelings without actually being hurt.
This song is relevant at this time thinking of all the men in Iraq and Afghanistan and other places that those places overshadow who are dying for our freedom every day. Whether you believe in that politically doesn't matter. They believe it, and that's why they're dying.
Prayer To St. Peter (3.5 MB MP3)
Let them in, Peter
For they are very tired
Give them couches where the angels sleep
And light those fires
Let them wake whole again
To brand new dawns
Fired by the sun
Not war-times bloody guns
May their peace be deep
Remember where the broken bodies lie
God knows how young they were
To have to die
You know God knows how young they were
To have to die
Give them things they like
Let them make some noise
Give dance hall bands not golden harps
To these our boys
Let them love Peter
For they've had no time
They should have bird songs and trees
And hills to climb
The taste of summer
And a ripened pear
And girls as sweet as meadow wind
And flowing hair
And tell them how they are missed
But say not to fear
It's gonna be all right
With us down here

Free Cereal and Free Milk [09/03/05]
[43 Things | Food]
Today, I used my free milk and cereal coupon at Central Market. These are things I buy every week, so it worked out great. I bought Central Market Organics Toasty O's. They have an ingredient that's not on my diet (sugar), but I'm hoping it's not enough sugar to screw me up. I'll go back to eating Barbara's Breakfast O's when those are gone. I also bought:
- Starfruit (never tried it before)
- Kiwis
- Raspberries
- Cantaloupe
- Lettuce
- Tomatoes
- Cauliflower
- Southwest Marinated Pork Loin
- Hamburger Patties mixed with Hatch Peppers
- Salmon
- Grilled Veggies (eggplant, squash, zucchini, onion, asparagus)
It’s all good!!

Just Some Stuff - Crabapple Lane, Austin, Weight, and My Muse [09/01/05]
[Just Some Stuff]
- I read that Crabapple Lane Rob, his wife Patsy, and his Mom are okay in Bush, LA, after Hurricane Katrina. Still no word from other family members. I'm keeping them in my prayers.
- Today is the first day of the Austin smoking ban. Back when the proposition passed, I had planned to go out to a club on this day. I only remembered again this morning when some DeeJays were talking about it, and speculating gleefully that Austin won't be able to enforce it, so people will probably smoke anyway. Just one more word: Disrespectful.
- I've been dieting and exercising, and I've lost 24 pounds now. My big goal is to lose 86 pounds, and probably a little more. A couple of intermediate goals I've already hit include: someone asking me if I've lost weight and feeling the bottom of my ribs when I suck in my stomach.
Future intermediate goals include: see my collarbone in the mirror, get below 200, lose 14 more pounds before Halloween, fit comfortably into a pair of jeans, fit into that pair of leopard print panties I have, have a defined jawbone, feel OK in a bathing suit, feel comfortable getting up from my computer chair without turning my webcam off for fear someone will see my fat arse, do 10 good pushups from my toes, and fit into a little black dress with straps and cleavage.
- I've finally found my muse, and it's the best feeling in the world. I think I'll finally make some headway on my first real solo CD.
