Summer Cleaning [07/31/04]

[What's Going On?]

Today is all about cleaning and organizing. My house is a mess. The first thing I'm going to do is go through the back log of FlyLady Missions I have in my mailbox. One of her crew sends an email each day Monday through Friday and gives us a 15 minute cleaning/organizing mission. I haven't done any for 3 weeks.

Then I'll do whatever else needs doing. Vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom counter, water the plants, etc.

There are a couple of things I need to stop procrastinating: cleaning out the garage and making the back bathroom useable again. I won't get to those today, though.

I'm looking forward to cleaning. I need to move around, and I love to relax in a clean house when it's all done. smile

Opening Ceremony [07/30/04]

[Office Olympics]

Olympic TorchYesterday, we had the opening ceremony for the Office Olympics. All the countries were introduced. Some of the teams really whoooped it up. Like Team USA. I'm not sure if our Ireland team whooped it up much. I whooped, but I was too caught up in the moment to know if we were an intimadating force. Somehow, I think not. I took a picture of us early in the festivities before anyone was whooping. I had to cut my supervisor out of the picture because he got gumped (that's where the camera catches you with a real goofy look on your face). He'd kill me if I posted it. So I'll just talk about it and chuckle to myself.

Monday's event is the Spelling Bee. Tuesday is Rubber Band Archery. I'm not competing in either of those, but I'm planning to be there taking pictures.

Go Irish!!

A Show of Support for My Country [07/28/04]

[Office Olympics]

Tonight I dyed my hair red to show support for my Irish Office Olympic team. I'd take a webcam picture, but you can't really tell. It's really only kinda highlighted red... the best I could do without going permanent. But if I stand under the light a certain way...

The Irish are hosting the jumble event. Apparently, we have to come up with a jumble puzzle like they have in the paper.

I've decided I'd like to compete in physical stuff rather than stuff that makes you have to think real hard. Hallway Bowling and Conference Table Ping Pong sound like fun.

I was talking to a team member today and said something about us being Irish. He didn't know what I was talking about. So I asked him... didn't he get the memo about the office olympics from our section manager? He didn't remember. Then I saw it dawn on him, and he said... "Oh yeah... I did get a memo, but it was too much reading." laugh

Go Irish!!

Office Olympics [07/27/04]

[Office Olympics]

My office is having some mandatory fun that will kick off on Thursday. It's office Olympics. My section is Ireland. There will be events such as Paper B-ball, Rubber Band Arch, Disk-us Throw, and a Scavenger Hunt. We (Ireland) are hosting the Jumble event. I'm not sure what that is, but I suspect it involves anagrams. We're thinking about pretending we misread the memo and hosting a Juggle event instead. After all, we've been practicing for months now.

The unfair thing is that when a country wins a metal in the real Olympics, the corresponding office Olympic country gets points. Ireland only won one metal in the 2000 Olympics. Oh well... maybe this is Ireland's year this year.

Go Irish!!

Gods of Music Review - A Little Bit [07/23/04]

[Music - Mine]

One of the first songs I ever recorded, "A Little Bit" was selected for the soundtrack of an independent film called Making The Mob several years ago. Another one of my songs, "Do It For You" was part of the soundtrack, too. I've never seen the movie, so tonight I was searching Google for it to see if maybe I could find a copy to download. I didn't, but I found a less than flattering review of "A Little Bit" at God's of Music. I've never seen that review before. No telling how long it's been there.

The thing is... I agree with it, and am fortunate they didn't rip the song to shreds. Gods of Music is known for scathing reviews. I never ever would have submitted that song for a review myself, but I guess it got submitted as part of the soundtrack. When I saw the entry in Google, I expected the worst. This song was recorded on a four-track cassette recorder at my friend's house when I was first starting out. I wasn't able to sing with any emotion, really, because if I wasn't very careful, the vocal would distort. That's why it sounds like I'm reading notes off a page. Now I have a compressor that can handle the dynamics in my voice, so I'm able to sing with more feeling. But still... I could have enunciated better. The way it is, it sounds like I have a hick accent. I don't think I do, but, of course, I'd be the last to know. wink

The corporate Disneyland synth strings and drum track are just that... cheesy sounds from midi patches. No argument there.

I'm not sure about the "mediocre songwriting" comment. There are lines in the song that could be mediocre (like the last line... I struggled with that one and finally just gave up), but I think the lyrics as a whole aren't mediocre. And I think the chord progressions are cool. I dunno. I'm proud of my little song. Maybe I'll re-record it one day the way it should be recorded.

As for the last line in the review... "The elements of this song, though not individually BAD, don't create a particularly striking atmosphere of romantic love." Well good... it's not about romantic love. It's a story about talking yourself into loving someone because you're afriad you might never find anyone else. Nothing romantic about that.

A Little Bit

I stumble on the walk
Fight off turning back
To see your crooked smile
Wanting....

You're a little bit scared
I'm a little too shy
But I've found a lover's grace
In your eyes
I'll never change my mind

I'll always be with you
I've hardly the choice of an early day
Dusk is falling
And I'm falling....

I'm a little bit cold
You're a little too high
Turn on the stereo
Come inside
I will be here all night

You're a little bit tired
I'm a little too lost
Call my name
Help me find my way....

Listen to "A Little Bit" if ya want.

Chicken Wings [07/19/04]

[Food]

This weekend, I did something I do sometimes. I intentionally paid for and ate something I don't like very much. I don't know why I do it, but every once in a while, I order something at a restaurant or buy something to cook that I know full well I don't like. Am I alone in this?

This weekend, it was chicken wings. A Wing Stop opened not too far from home, and they put a flyer on my door. The thing that got me interested was the lemon pepper flavored ones. They have several flavors: Atomic, Cajun, Original Hot, Mild, Lemon Pepper, Garlic Parmesan, Hawaiian Barbeque and Teriyaki.

I figured chicken wings would be great for some low carb meals. The smallest order where I could get 3 flavors was 35 wings. I wanted to try Lemon Pepper, Hawaiian Barbeque and Mild. The order lasted me 3 meals and a snack, so it was worth it.

But I still have a beef with chicken wings. Why do they have to be so dang hot??? I mean *heat* hot, not *spicy* hot. When I got them home, they were still too hot to handle. I don't mind fork food that's hot, but finger food shouldn't be hot!!

My other problem with chicken wings is that the first bite is always a not-quite-a-mouthful of fatty skin. Patooey! But all the flavoring is on the skin! I'd like them better if they would cook them long enough to make the skin crispy. But then, they'd probably be even hotter!

The leftover meals were better because I only heated them in the microwave long enough to take the chill from the fridge out of them. I'll probably get chicken wings again. But I won't eat them fresh out of the oven. The mild ones were tasty; the lemon pepper ones were tasty; and the hawaiian barbeque ones were bleh. Next time I'll go for mild, lemon pepper and teriyaki. Or maybe garlic parmesan.

Dream Journal - Lily Loses Her Nose [07/17/04]

[Dream Journal]

I got up in the early morning hours Thursday night/Friday morning to take Lily out. She woke me up. But I guess I didn't get up quick enough because when I walked in the other bedroom to put on some clothes, there was a puddle of peepee on the floor. I cleaned it up, took her out and went back to bed. Then I had this dream:

I woke up and noticed wet spots on the floor behind the bed and in other spots. I heard Lily licking. I found her and the bones along her muzzle were exposed. She didn't have a nose. There was just a bone sticking forward and her tongue was coming out from under that bone. The wet spots were drool.

I called the vet's office and identified myself as Kim Novak and told them I needed to bring Lily in. The lady accused me of making a prank call. She didn't believe me because of my name. I told her it was a real call, but she hung up on me. I think she hung up on me a few times. I finally made an appointment.

Later in the dream's day, I realized I had forgotten what time the appointment was, and I was very worried I'd already missed it. I was feeling awful.. like I wasn't taking care of my dog like I should.

Time Life Singer Songwriters Collection [07/17/04]

[Music]

Time Life Singer Songwriters CollectionI've never considered buying any of those mixed CDs you see advertised on TV. Wait... when I was a youngster, I got a couple of K-Tel albums. I think I still have them, too. But since then, I've never wanted one until now.

There's a really long commercial on right now about the Time Life Singer Songwriters Collection. Wow... I want it! I don't want to pay $120, though. It's probably worth it... 140 songs in all. But I'm trying not to throw money around this month. I need to start being more careful about that.

But man... what a collection of wonderful music! Some of the songs on the CDs are:

  • Wild World - Cat Stevens
  • Your Song - Elton John
  • At Seventeen - Janis Ian
  • He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother - The Hollies
  • Time In A Bottle - Jim Croce
  • Hello, It's Me - Todd Rundgren
  • Annie's Song - John Denver
  • Wildfire - Michael Martin Murphey
  • If You Leave Me Now - Chicago
  • Dreamweaver - Gary Wright
  • I'm In You - Peter Frampton
  • Sometimes When We Touch - Dan Hill
  • For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield
Some people have tried to tell me I'm a child of the 80's. No way... this is the music I grew up on. Maybe I'll check all the pockets of all my coats and pants and see if I might have accidently left a $100 bill in one of them. Just wishful thinking, of course. But if I find one, I know exactly what I'm going to spend it on. smile

Dream Journal - Hover Fish [07/14/04]

[Dream Journal]

I was taking Lily for a walk. I noticed a lake off to the right, and realized we were walking farther than we usually do. I think it was Clear Lake in Houston. Then we came to a stream crossing our path. At first, I told her I wasn't wearing the right shoes to walk through it. I was wearing flip flops. But then I told her okay.

We stepped into the stream, and she took a left turn to stay in the stream. We walked in between some trees. I noticed a fish hovering above the water like it was swimming in air. I noticed another long fish hoving above the water. It had a big mouth. Lily walked near it, and it started to open it's mouth to bite her. I pulled her leash and pulled her away from the fish.

When we got home (it was my childhood home), I saw my mom through the window holding a small alligator. I was thinking I needed to be careful because it would probably try to bite Lily, too.

Inside, I realized I had missed a bunch of classes and forgot what my schedule was. A class was just letting out, and a girl said since I and another guy did the presentation last time, could she do the next one.

Monday Madness - 10 Questions [07/13/04]

[Memes - Monday Madness]

Monday Madness
True or false or something else...
  1. I like my job. Mostly, I do.
  2. I find time to 'smell the flowers' so to speak. True.
  3. I have no problem thinking of things to write about in my blog. I used to try to think of things to write, but now if I don't have anything to write, I don't write. I like to let things flow naturally.
  4. 'Organization' is my middle name Nope. That's not my middle name.
  5. If 'Plan A' doesn't work, there's always a 'Plan B.' Well sure... there's always Plan B. Sometimes it's desirable, sometimes not.
  6. I adjust easily to new surroundings. True.
  7. I'd rather work 'behind the scenes' than 'in the spotlight.' I would like my work or music or whatever to be in the spotlight, but I don't want to be in the spotlight myself.
  8. I'm happy where I am, at this point in my life. I want to be somewhere else, but I can't say I'm not generally happy.
  9. I can wake up in the morning without an alarm clock. Of course. But not necessarily on time. wink
  10. I can function pretty well on less than 8 hours of sleep. 7 hours? yes. 2 hours? no.

Sometimes I Don't Love My Job [07/12/04]

[What's Going On?]

On Friday, I posted about how much I love my job sometimes. Today was one of those days I didn't love my job. One reason is because I messed up some things, so it's partly my own fault. I posted a wrong deadline date on our website for something. Gak! ohwell

But another reason I don't love my job so much is because I've got to try to make our entire website consistent. It's a tough job, because we have other people who are responsible for the content in different sections and they want to control all aspects of the pages they manage. When I try to institute a consistent treatment of something across the whole site, it ruffles feathers.

I'm working out some procedures to address this stuff, but it takes time. I didn't get to work on programming my fun java application until 4:00 p.m. Then at 5:00 p.m., the program I use to write code had a fatal error, and I lost some of my work. Boo Hoo. So I stayed until 5:30 redoing some stuff. Hopefully tomorrow, I'll get to work on the fun stuff all day without mishap. I'm crossing my fingers.

Dream Journal - Quest for a Bathroom [07/11/04]

[Dream Journal]

I was at my desk at work and a lady was going to show a group of us how to use some new software. She was going to have me run the PC while she talked. I had to go to the bathroom, so I told her to wait just a minute because I should go before we got started.

I went to a bathroom, but it was full of people. I went to another bathroom, but some of the toilets didn't have stalls... they were just out in the open. The ones with stalls were full. The bathroom was all stainless steel and tile. The toilets were even stainless steel.

Then I was roaming the halls looking for a bathroom. I ended up in a dark part of the building. It reminded me of some buildings at the University of Texas. I found a handicapped bathroom, so I went in and locked the door behind me. Then some young boys opened the door. The lock didn't work. I was yelling at them to leave me alone, but they kept opening the door.

When I was finished, I was trying to find my way back to work. I had roamed so far that I was in another part of downtown. It was dark outside, too. I walked through a restaurant. Then I was walking along the streets toward my work.

Surprisingly, I finally lost another pound. I'd been drinking a lot of heavy cream lattes at Starbucks, and I think that was stalling my weight loss for a while.

Dream Journal - Bill Gates [07/10/04]

[Dream Journal]

I only remember one part of the dream I had last night. I wasn't in the dream... just watching what was going on. There was a meeting and someone knocked on the door. He needed to talk to Bill Gates. He said if Mr. Gates didn't answer, he was going to come in.

I saw Bill Gates. He was thin, and had thick blond hair that was curled under framing his face. Then I realized this was a movie or TV show. The person playing Gates was a woman. I asked someone else to confirm that it was an actress playing Gates.

Then Gates started stripping off his/her jacket and shirt. He/she had an black evening dress on underneath with some rhinestones sewn on.

Sometimes I Love My Job [07/09/04]

[What's Going On?]

I was so into my job today, that I didn't want to leave at 5:00. I wanted to stay and work on the little application I'm programming in java. It's an interest calculator.

In Texas state government, we have to pay our vendors interest if we pay them more than 30 days after we get their invoice or they deliver the goods/services (whichever is later). It used to be a straight 12 percent, but when the economy hit the crapper, the legislature decided to base the interest rate on the prime rate. I don't know the exact formula... I just have to pull the interest rate from a database table that someone else maintains.

My calculator will calculate the number of days a payment is late and do the interest calculation. It'll also calculate the 30 day due date if the person doesn't want to count that him/herself.

It's so fun! Yay!

Oil Change and Car Inspection [07/05/04]

[What I Did Today]

I decided to clean the inside of my car today and get my oil changed. It was overdue for an oil change. I also needed to replace my old vehicle registration sticker with the new one I got in the mail.

I scraped the old sticker off and started to put the new sticker on when I realized... I scraped off the inspection sticker instead of the registration sticker!! It was in many small pieces. There was no salvaging it.

So I had to get my car inspected today, too. Luckily, it expired next month anyway and the same place that changes oil does inspections. There was no problem with the inspection. I love my Honda. smile

Dream Journal - Mall Airport Community [07/01/04]

[Dream Journal]

I was staying at some community where lots of other people were. Sometimes it was like a mall. Sometimes like cottages with spaces of land. There was a crazy guy living among us. I can't remember if he was killing people or just hurting them. I was trying to avoid him.

Some guys were trying to take a jeep full of stuff somewhere. They drove by me, and then I was helping one of the guys float it down a river that was in the mall place. I said maybe we should tie balloons to it to help it float. But it was floating okay, just underneath the surface. I was swimming and guiding it. There was a corner on the river. There was a 90 degree angled wall where the turn was and I couldn't see around the corner, but I heard a waterfall. So I steered the floating jeep thing over to a nook in the wall. The guy swam around the corner and told me it was nothing. At this point, he was George Clooney. So I swam around there, and then I could stand up. It was kinda dark, and he jumped over the falls without really looking. He ended up landing on a bunch of rocks and breaking lots of bones.

By this time the jeep turned into something I could carry. There was a long ramp on the side of the falls, so I walked down it carrying the stuff. I walked over to where the guy was laying. He was laying on his back and conscious, but hurt pretty bad.

Then there was a flash forward and I was wearing a dress standing next to a railroad track. There were poles next to the track. There was also another girl in a dress. When the train went by, we had to grab a pole and lean way back to keep from getting hit with a guy's hair. Turns out it was the guy who landed on the rocks. This was the way of flashing forward to show he survived. He had thick, long, curly hair. He wasn't George Clooney at this point.

Then I was at the community place again. I was washing some dishes, but I realized it was close to 1:30 p.m., and I had to go catch a plane back home to Austin. My flight was leaving at 1:30. I grabbed my backpack and stuff and went to the hallway in the mall that was the airport terminal. I couldn't find my ticket in my pocket. I only found old tickets. I looked in my backpack, and it was there in the blue passport type folder. I started walking to the gate, and realized I didn't have my ticket in hand. I looked back, and it was on the floor at a couple of people's feet, so I went to get it.

I got to the gate, and the lady was looking at my ticket. My brother and sister-in-law had come to see me off. At that point, I knew I was in Dallas and they had driven up from Houston to see me at the airport. The lady at the gate was looking confused, so I looked at my ticket. My flight left at 9:30 that morning.

I asked if there was another flight to Houston (hmmm... I was going to Austin). She said something cryptic, but optimistic, like maybe there was a secret flight. My brother or sister-in-law said there were no more flights that night. I was thinking I could sit and read my book until the next flight, but then I thought they might want to wait with me, so we'd do something. At that point, it was 11:00 p.m. instead of 1:30, and I figured there would be no more flights.
