This or That - Potpourri [07/22/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. DVD or VHS? I like both.

2. Best Literary/Movie Villian: Voldemort (Harry Potter) or Sauron (LoTR)? Sauron scares me a lot more. He who must not be named seems to be a little bungling sometimes.

3. Meat: rare or well-done? I like beef medium rare. All other meat I like cooked through, but not dry.

4. High Speed Internet-Cable or DSL? I have cable.

5. Women: 1-piece bathing suit or Bikini? The last one I wore was a 1-piece. I never liked bikinis, though, because I like to dive in and the bottoms come off when I do that. blush

6. To be fair--Men: Boxers or briefs? Spongebob wears briefs.

7. Beer or Liquor/Wine? I rarely drink, but I like margaritas on the rocks. I've been known to do a tequila shot once in a while, too. I don't like beer, but I like a good imported raspberry ale.

8. Coke or Mountain Dew? Coke. But I like that new Mountain Dew Livewire (or whatever it's called). None of that stuff is on my diet, though.

9. In honor of my 10/18/03 nuptials: Morning or Afternoon/Night Wedding? Good lord... no way I'd want to do that in the morning. Afternoon would be best, I think.

10. Carpet or Hardwood Floors? I've always liked carpet, but I kinda like tile with big area rugs, too.

11. American cars or foreign? I'm not partial.

12. Cutest TV Twin: Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen? I dunno.

13. Coffee: Caffeinated or Decaf? Boo Hoo. I'm trying to kick my caffeine addiction, so I've been drinking decaf. It's actually not that bad if I make it weak and put a lot of cream in it.

14. Thought-Provoking Question of the Week: Computers: Do they make life better or worse? Why? Computers make our lives better. If someone's life is worse, it's not the computer's fault.

This or That - Summer Potpourri [07/08/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Strawberries or blueberries? Strawberries.

2. "Legally Blonde 2" or "Terminator 3"? Terminator 3, definitely.

3. Hamburgers or hot dogs? If they're made on a grill, I'll take the hot dogs. If they're made on the stove, I'd love a hamburger (medium rare). smile

4. Boating or hiking? Shoot... if I had a choice, I'd go boating.

5. Suntan lotion or sunblock? I'd like something with some protection, but will let me get some color, too.

6. "Big Brother" or "The Amazing Race"? I've not seen either, but I suspect I would rather see "The Amazing Race."

7. Beach Boys or Jimmy Buffett? Probably Jimmy Buffett, but can we watch it on TV? I don't want to go to an outdoor concert. And come to think of it... if we're going to watch TV, can we watch something else? I've got a lot of good movies on my TiVo and if I don't watch them, they'll get deleted. 8. Grow your own produce or buy from supermarket/greengrocer/farm stand? Buy it from the supermarket.

9. Drive with car windows/top down, or with air-conditioning on? Air conditioning, most of the time.

10. Go away for vacation, or stay at home? *sigh* Stay home, I guess.

This or That - Summer Fun [07/01/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Lemonade or Ice Cold Beer? Lemonade, please.

2. Swimming pool or beach? Which one is less crowded? I'd prefer the swimming pool if neither one is crowded.

3. Long weekends here and there, or a 2-week vacation? The fantasy is to have both. The reality is that I love taking time off too much to ever save up enough leave time to take a 2-week vacation. When I worked as a state auditor, though, I used to earn lots of comp time while traveling, so I was able to take month long vacations. That was awesome.

4. Destination: Acapulco or Hawaii? Hawaii, of course. My friend Peppermint Tina is there. smile

5. Destination: Mountains or Beach? I don't care anymore... I'd just like a vacation.

6. Hotel/motel/B&B or camping? Hotel/motel/B&B

7. Carefully planned vacation, or play it by ear? I like a little of both. If there's no plan, the things I want to do won't get done or will get botched. But it's fun to have some extra time to just mess around at will, too.

8. Sneakers or sandals? Sneakers. Definitely sneakers.

9. Air-conditioning or fans? Ugh.. air-conditioning.

10. Concerts in the park or baseball games? As much as I hate baseball, I'd rather go to a baseball game than a concert in the park. How about a concert at the indoor baseball stadium. I like that idea. smile

This or That - Surfing [06/24/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Surf sites at random, or have a set list of regular reads? I have regular reads, but every so often I like to click the I'm Feeling Lucky blogrolling link to see what I find.

2. Do you visit mostly blogs, or news or other sites? Blogs and message boards. But mostly blogs. I visit news sites when I'm looking for something specific or when a blog has a link to a story that sounds interesting.

3. Do you go online every day, or just a couple of days a week? Every day.

4. Do you allow comments on your blog, or not? Sure. Comment all you like. smile

5. Do you shop online at all, or at regular stores? Both. Shopping online is so convenient. I wish they would all ship by US Postal Service, though. It's a pain in the butt when they ship by Fed Ex or UPS, and they won't leave it at my door. It's like there's this assumption that every house has someone at home all day. I have to work for a living, ya know?

6. Have you ever done online bill-paying/banking, or not? No. I started to set up an online account with my bank, but they wanted to know the amount of the last deposit I made. At the time, I was selling stuff on Ebay and making several deposits a week. I had no idea what the *last* deposit amount was. So I aborted the account set up process and haven't tried since.

I have an account with a strictly online bank that MP3.com required when they were doing direct deposit. But I don't know how to access it. I don't think there's any money in there anyway. I wish they would send me a statement. Stoopid online banks.

7. Which news site do you prefer... MSNBC.com or CNN.com? Or do you prefer some other one? I like Foxnews.com and CNN.com.

8. Live chat rooms, or message boards? I prefer message boards. Except for one scheduled chat I go to once every two weeks, I could really do without chatting. It makes me tired.

9. Instant messaging or e-mail? I hate instant messaging. HATE it. (Dang... I'm a real negative nellie today tongue)

10. Yes or no: have you ever met, or at least talked on the phone with, another blogger? If not, would you want to? Why or why not? Not another blogger, although it could happen. But I've met a few people who I first met online. I'm not real big on meeting people in person, though.

This or That - Reading [06/17/03]

[Memes - This or That | Reading]

1. Newspapers or magazines? I rarely read either, but I think I'd rather read a current newspaper.

2. Books-on-tape or regular books? Regular.

3. Paperback or hardcover? Paperback.

4. Fiction or non-fiction? Fiction, mostly.

5. Sci-Fi/Fantasy or romance novels? Fantasy.

6. Borrow from library or buy books (either new or used)? I buy them. It takes me way too long to read a book to borrow.

7. Subscribe to magazines or buy on newsstand? I read them at the doctor's office or the oil change place or the hair salon.

8. Current best-sellers or classic literature? Current best-sellers, I guess. They don't have to be best-sellers, though.

9. Read books once, or re-read favorites every so often? I like to re-read favorites every so often.

10. Here in the U.S., we have two hot best-sellers...former First Lady Hillary Clinton's memoirs, and the new Harry Potter book (coming out June 21). If you had to read one, which one...Hillary or Harry? Why? I love Harry Potter books. smile

This or That - Movies and TV Shows [06/10/03]

[Memes - This or That]

2. "The Sopranos" or the "Godfather" movies? Godfather

3. "The Jetsons" or "Lost in Space"? "Lost in Space." Billy Mumy was my first celebrity crush.

4. "Superman" or "Batman" (either the TV shows or the movies)? Enjoy them... I'll watch something else.

5. "Sex & The City" or "Friends"? I've only seen a small snippet of "Sex & The City." I couldn't get through a whole one. I'll take "Friends."

6. "The Wizard of Oz" or the "Harry Potter" movies? Harry Potter.

7. "The Simpsons" or "King of the Hill"? Both!

8. "Grease" or "Saturday Night Fever"? If I was forced to watch one, it would be "Saturday Night Fever." Of course, if I was being forced to watch one, whoever was forcing me would probably have an even bigger cruel streak and make me watch "Grease." It gives me the willies to think about it. Ugh.

9. Old prime-time soaps: "Dallas" or "Dynasty"? Neither. I liked one called Emerald Point NAS. Of course, they cancelled it after I got addicted. It had Sela Ward, Richard Dean Anderson, and Susan Dey in it.

10. Not very thought-provoking this week...do you prefer TV shows or movies? If I had to give up either one, I would miss it.

This or That - Animals [06/03/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Cats or dogs? Cats AND Dogs. Mullet, Socks, Sneakers, Boots, Buster Brown, Charlie Brown, Mandy and Lily.

4. Turtles or snakes? Check out all the snakes that Paula has. She has a turtle, too.

5. Frogs or grasshoppers? I picked up a frog once, and all his guts came out his mouth. I didn't realize he was dead. I saw a grasshopper on my garage door the other day.

6. Lions or tigers? Christine said she saw a beast that was half lion, half tiger. I'd like to see that.

7. Elephants or mice? I've never had either for a pet.

8. Porcupines or aardvarks? Was the Pink Panther's nemesis an aardvark? I can't remember. I didn't much like that show anyway.

9. Unicorns or dragons? I used to collect unicorns. I suspect I have a bunch in storage. Someday soon, I'll give them away.

10. Thought-Provoking Question of the Week: You live in a rather dumpy apartment. A friend offers you a chance to be a roommate at a new place s/he is moving into, but they don't allow pets. You have a pet. Do you find your pet a new home and take the new place, or do you keep your pet and stay put? Good Lord... of course I wouldn't give up my pet. Sheesh.

This or That - Habits, Quirks, Routines [05/27/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Do you prefer silence or do you like background sound (music, TV, etc)? If I'm reading or doing something that requires thinking, I want silence. Otherwise, music or TV is fine as long as it's something I like. I don't like noise for the sake of noise, though.

2. Bathe/shower in morning or evening? Shower in the morning.

3. Sleeping in complete darkness, or with a nightlight on? I don't need complete darkness, but nothing too bright either. Although, I sleep fine after the sun comes up. heh!

5. Hang up/fold clothes neatly, or just toss them wherever? Hang them up and fold them (fairly) neatly.

6. Work out at a gym, or at home on your own (or do you not bother with exercise)? I walk the stairs at work and walk on the treadmill at home. It takes too much time going to and from the gym, and then you have to deal with, errrr, people.

7. Talk on the phone, or via IM/e-mail? Email all the way. No phone. No IM.

8. Are you usually on time, or late? I'm usually early.

9. Spendthrift or frugal? Isn't that the same thing? I spend more than I probably should, but there are some things I can't bring myself to spend money on. Like color print cartridges for my printer. Yeah... it prints pretty in color, but when do I really *need* to print something in color. To impress someone? Oh well... let them be not impressed.

10. Thought-Provoking Question of the Week: You work with someone who is not in the habit of bathing regularly. The smell seems to be getting worse and worse! Would you: 1. try to do something about it, or 2. try to grin and bear it? If you said 1, what would you do? I'd probably grin and bear it.

This or That - Potpourri [05/20/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Large or small family? My immediate family was small. Mom, Dad, Brother, Me. My extended family on my Mom's side was small. My extended family on my Dad's side was large. I don't plan on having any kids of my own unless I marry into them.

2. Potato chips or pretzels? Either one, I guess. I like to eat salty pretzels with chocolate ice cream.

3. House or apartment? I live in a duplex, but I'd like a house.

4. Zebras or giraffes? I've never eaten either one. wink

5. Candles or potpourri? Raspberry scented candles. Sometimes potpourri can have a sickly sweet smell. But, then again, so can candles.

6. Flowers or trees? I've killed both. Not on purpose.

7. Right or left-handed? I'm right handed, but I'm told I deal cards left-handed.

8. Model trains or dolls/stuffed animals? I think model trains are real cool, but to do it right, you pretty much have to have a whole room dedicated to it.

9. Comedy or drama? Most likely drama.

10. Thought-provoking question of the week: The city of Boston has recently banned smoking in all restaurants and bars. Would you want to see such a law passed in your city/town/country, or not? Yes, please.

This or That - Potpourri [05/13/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Packrat or minimalist? I've been a packrat all my life, but I'm trying to scale back. A few years ago, I stopped collecting so much stuff, though. Like penguins... I collect them, so I used to get every penguin I'd see. Now I just admire them and only get one if I truly feel I can't do without.

2. Computer: desktop or laptop? I use a desktop mostly. I have a laptop, but it's really old. I think it has 4 megabytes of ram. laugh It still works if I need to check email on AOL, though. So if I ever go on a vacation, I'll take it with me. smile

3. Seashore or mountains? At this point, I'd take either. I haven't had a vacation in so long. frown

4. Carpeting or bare floors? I like carpeting except in the bathrooms, kitchen, and entryway. But I kinda like the look of tile flooring in the living areas. And after having my dog upchuck on the carpet several times, I think I'd rather have something easier to clean.

5. Drinking water: bottled or tap? I drink bottled water at work. I use a Brita water filter for tap water at home.

6. Shopping websites: eBay or Amazon? Mostly Amazon. I used to be addicted to eBay, but I've gotten away from it.

7. Cute little kitties or big scary tigers? That question is a bit leading, no? I like big beautiful tigers. haha I'll take cute little kitties over scary tigers.

8. Front door or back door? I don't have a back door. frown

9. Lots of jewelry, or little/none? Just a little.

10. Thought-provoking question of the week: At the last minute, you obtain tickets to an event you're dying to attend. However, you have to work that day! Do you ask the boss for the time off, or just call in sick? It depends on what is going on at work. If I feel like I can miss, I'll just be honest with my supervisor. He's cool. If I didn't think I could miss because of a deadline or a meeting or whatever, I'd just go to work.

This or That - Media [05/06/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. TV or radio? I rarely listen to the radio at home. I either have the TV on or a CD. In the car, it's either the radio or a CD.

2. On the radio: talk or music station? I generally don't like talk radio, but during the war this year, I listened to one of the AM talk stations to catch up in the mornings. Otherwise, I listen to a music station (although they talk a lot in the mornings).

3. Actual books or books-on-tape (or e-books)? Actual books. I've considered trying a book on tape, but I really don't think I could concentrate on it. I have a hard time even knowing what the lyrics are in a song I'm listening to. E-books don't attract me at all.

4. Actual newspaper, or web version? Web. Although my daddy was a pressman for the Houston Chronicle. I just never got into reading the newspaper.

5. Wall Street Journal or National Enquirer? Gak! Neither! But I'd take the Enquirer over the WSJ if there was nothing else to read.

6. TV news...news channel such as CNN, or your local broadcast news? Either.

7. A movie you've been looking forward to seeing gets bad reviews all around. See it anyway, or pass? I might wait until it comes on cable. I don't go to many movies anyway.

8. See movies when they first come out, or wait a few weeks for the lines at the theater to get shorter? Wait a few weeks.

4. Watching on TV...a classic movie or a reality show? Probably a classic movie.

5. Wearing: blue jeans or sweat pants? My sweat pants have been a lot more comfortable than my jeans lately. blush But I sure need to find some sweat pants with pockets.

8. Soft, classical music, or upbeat rock & roll? Rock & Roll. Woohoo!

9. Darkness or light? Darkness if I'm resting. Light if I'm doing stuff.

10. Thought-provoking question of the week: You get married, or otherwise begin cohabitating with a significant other. S/he moves into your place, but brings with them the UGLIEST chair you have ever seen! You really don't want this thing in your home, but SO says it is the most comfy chair s/he has ever sat in, and no way will they part with it. Do you: grin and bear it, or scheme to get rid of the monstrosity somehow? The chair wouldn't offend me. I'm all for comfort rather than style.

This or That - What is? [04/22/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Yummier: Chocolate ice cream or strawberry cheesecake? That's a tough one... I like chocolate more than strawberry, but I like cheesecake more than ice cream. How about I pick chocolate cheesecake? grin

2. Better to watch on TV: Movies or sports? That's way too general... what movie? who's playing what sport?

3. A better web browser: MSIE or Netscape (or tell us your own favorite!) Netscape 4 sucks. Bigtime. The Netscape versions after that are okay, I guess, but I'm a big fan of MSIE. happy

4. A better way to travel: Automobile or bus/train? I love my car!

5. Your preferred camera: Digital or film? Digital, for sure!

9. A stinkier smell: Skunk or gasoline (petrol)? Gasoline.

10. Thought-provoking question of the week: What is more important to you: making a ton of money and being at the top of your field, or finding your soulmate and living a comfortable but not wealthy life? Hands down... being comfortable with my soulmate. Chasing money and recognition sucks.

This or That - Money [04/15/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. File taxes as early as possible, or wait until the last possible minute? I usually do them pretty early, but this year I waited until the second to last minute. I think the procrastination factor is directly related to how many forms I have to fill out.

2. File electronically, or mail paper forms? Some years, things are so simple that I file by phone. Those are the years I get things done early. This year I had to do the full 1040. If I have to do forms, I always mail them.

3. Prepare your own taxes, or have someone do it for you? I've always done my own.

4. Are you a saver or a spender? More of a spender, I guess. But I do put money in savings when I have some left over at the end of the month.

5. Do you prefer to carry cash, or pay with plastic (credit/debit cards), or by check? I usually have $100 at most in my wallet. I use that for eating out mostly and replenish it when it's gone. For everything else, I usually use plastic or a check.

6. You're broke and desperately need a job, but the only places that are hiring are retail or fast food places. Which would you pick? Retail. I worked in food service for about 2 weeks when I was in high school. I swore I never would again.

7. Keeping track of your money: are you more meticulous or careless about it? I wouldn't say I'm careless, but I don't do a budget or track the spending. I balance my checkbook every month, though.

8. What do you do if you find yourself with a lot of change weighing down your purse/pocket/wallet? Do you try to spend it to *get rid of it*, or do you put it in a jar or a piggy bank? I put it in a jar.

10. Thought-provoking question of the week: You find a wallet containing $5,000 in cash, as well as several credit cards and the owner's drivers' license. Your rent is due tomorrow and you're short $200. Do you take the money (some or all of it) and mail back the wallet anonymously...or do you return the wallet with all contents intact? I can't imagine being short on the rent. I hope I never experience that. frown I suspect if I was desperate, I'd take $200 from the wallet and mail back the rest.

This or That - Who Is [04/08/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Sexier (female)...Pamela Anderson or Jennifer Garner? I had to do a search to make sure Jennifer Garner was who I thought she was (she was). But even before I did the search (and no matter who she was), I was 99% sure I would say she was sexier than Pamela Anderson. Ick.

2. Sexier (male)...Ben Affleck or Matt Damon? I don't find Matt Damon the least bit sexy. So Ben Affleck.

8. Happy Happy Joy Joy or Bounce Bounce Bounce like Tigger? Tigger!!!!!

This or That - The Arts [03/25/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Poetry or prose? I guess I like prose better. Poetry is good unless it's too obscure to understand easily.

2. Funky modern art or the older, "classic" variety? Either one can be good. Either one can be awful.

3. Sculptures or paintings? See answer #2.

4. Theatre: exuberant musical or serious drama? I really really really don't like musicals. There are exceptions, but I get so frustrated when the story stops because a bunch of people start singing and dancing. Even if the story continues through the song, though, I'd rather skip the singing and dancing.

5. Ballet or modern dance? I'm not sure what modern dance is exactly. I suspect I'd like ballet better.

6. Movies: major studio or indie? Either one. One of my favorite movies ever, "Niagara, Niagara" was an indie film. Another favorite, "Aliens", was a studio film.

7. Authors: Shakespeare or Dr. Seuss? Both are wonderful.

8. TV: PBS or A&E? I think I'd be more inclined to stop on A&E during a channel surfing session than PBS.

9. Music: Beethoven or Beatles? Beatles.

10. Thought-provoking question of the week: You are a contributing member of your favorite art museum, and visit on a regular basis. They announce a new, temporary special exhibit by an artist surrounded by controversy...this person's work and/or political views offend you. Do you stop supporting the museum, or just stay away during the time the exhibit is there? Depends on whether it would seem like I supported the views personally. I'd probably just stay away for the duration fo the exhibit, though.

This or That - This and That [03/18/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Cold frosty ski slopes or warm sandy beach? Neither one. Ski slopes are, um, cold and frosty, and beaches are, well, sandy. How about a nice climate controlled hotel room with a view of either one?

2. Chevy or Ford? I'd have to do some research, but I'd pick the one that has the coolest interior.

3. Mac or PC? I have a PC at home. I used to work on a MAC at work, but now I work on a PC. It doesn't matter really.

4. Dial-up or high speed internet access? Egads. High speed.

5. Small *family-only* wedding or large 200+ guest wedding? I'd kinda like to elope. All the fuss of having people at a wedding would ruin the occasion for me.

6. Would you rather be the bridesmaid or the bride? (if you are a guy, substitute best man or groom)? Depends on who the groom is. wink

7. AC/DC or ABBA? AC/DC. I like that song "Hell's Bells."

8. Roses or daisies? I love roses. smile

9. Trashy romance novels or classic literature? Classic literature.

10. NEW! Thought-provoking question of the week...If you had to choose one...would you rather be blind or deaf? Why? I'm going to beg off on this one. The thing I like so much about This or That Tuesday is that it's typically light fare. Sorry.

This or That - Potpourri [03/11/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Married or single? Single.

2. Knit or crochet? I haven't done either in many years. And I've never finished anything I started. I could knit in two dimensions, but I never did more than crochet one long strand.

3. Homebody or world traveller? I'm a homebody when it comes to socializing around town, but I would love to travel the world. I need more money and more time off. I heard that workers in other countries get a lot more time off every year than workers in America.

My first job out of college, I got to take two vacations that were a month long each. That was so cool. But it's because I earned a lot of comp time from traveling for my job. Now I don't earn any comp time and can't seem to accumulate even a week of time off because I take a day here and there. Boo Hoo... personal problem. smile

4. "Star Search" or "American Idol"? I love American Idol. I used to watch Star Search, but wasn't ever that into it. Too much variety, I think. I never did like variety shows.

5. Dancing or karaoke? Karaoke!!!!

6. Elvis Presley or Elvis Costello? Elvis Costello. Can't we lay Elvis Presley to rest already?

7. Bus or train? I've never been on a train except for the monorail in Seattle and trains at amusement parks. I'd like to go on one sometimes. I don't ride the bus, either. I love my car. smile

8. Batman or Superman? Depends on who is playing which character. I think I'll pick the George Clooney Batman. cool

9. Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate, baybay!!!

10. Which came first...the chicken or the egg? Chicken. Mmmm... chicken.

This or That - Lunch [03/04/03]

[Food | Memes - This or That]

1. Soup or salad? Depends on the type of soup. I love French Onion with cheese melted on top, but that's usually not an option when they ask "soup or salad." I will say that I would rather have a good soup than a salad, though.

2. Hot or cold sandwiches? Either one, really. I like places that heat the cheese and bun. Like Schlotzky's Deli.

3. White or whole wheat bread (or rye, etc)? Definitely white. Sourdough is great.

4. Pack a lunch for work/school, or buy it? I always buy it unless I'm on a diet. I just don't have the time to fix a lunch in the morning, and I don't like using the fridge here at work. Something about community refrigerators makes me a little wary.

5. If you eat out...fast-food chain, or mom and pop type place? Either one.

6. Tuna or chicken salad? I prefer chicken salad, but only if it's all white meat. Tuna salad is okay, though. But make it white albacore. Not because of the dolphin controversy so much, but because it tastes better.

7. Cheese: Swiss or cheddar (or American, etc)? I prefer cheddar and provolone, but it depends on what I'm eating with it.

8. Mustard or mayo? Probably mayo, but mustard is good with corny dogs.

9. Sandwiches: wrap/pita pocket, or regular bread/roll? Depends on the quality of the pita bread. It's all about quality, man. smile

10. Sweet stuff: cookie/cake or fresh fruit? Gimme cookies and cake! happy

This or That - Potpourri [02/25/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Holland or Netherlands? Which one has the best food?

2. Emu or Ostrich? Both.

3. Biff or Happy? Ugh. Overacting gets on my nerves. I wonder if they'll ever make a version of "Death of a Salesman" where the actors don't overact.

4. Quincy or Braintree? Is that like Quincy the coroner? I liked him back in the day.

5. Cassius Clay or Muhammad Ali? Ick.

6. Instabul or Constantinople? Ick.

7. Pig or Swine? Pig. I like pot belly pigs. smile

8. Barf or Puke? Upchuck.

9. Potatoes or Spuds? Potatoes.

10. Squeeze Box or Accordion? Accordion. The other term gets on my nerves. I've always disliked The Who's "Squeezebox" song. Blech.

This or That - Potpourri [02/18/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Black or white? Black.

2. Plaid or stripes? Depends on the colors.

3. Paperback or hardcover books? Paperback all the way!

4. Color or B&W printer? Now that's somethin'. I have a color printer, but the color cartridges are so expensive that I'm scared to death to print anything in color for fear of it messing up and wasting the precious colored ink. Or... I end up using all the red (or blue or yellow) before I use the other colors and then everything prints wonky.

I've been wanting a new color printer because mine is around 10 years old and it doesn't always work good. But shopping for a color printer is mega stressful! Some take separate cartridges for each color (which sounds like a great idea). Some take separate black and color cartridges (sounds like another great idea). Some you have to switch the cartridges out based on whether you want color or black. But I just don't know what's the best. And why do I need to print in color anyway?

This is stressing me out just thinking about it. Does anyone have a Xanax?

5. Golden oldies or the newest tunes? Newest tunes mostly, please. smile

6. Ice cream: in a cone or a dish? I prefer a dish unless the cone is special. At Marble Slab Creamery, they have waffle cones dipped in chocolate. Yum.

7. Bath or shower? A shower daily. I'd like to be able to take a bath every once in a while to unwind, but my bathtub isn't big enough to stretch out.

8. Are you outgoing or shy? Shy, I guess. I don't really like that word, though. "Shy" makes it sound like I want to be outgoing, but have some sort of affliction. That's not so... I just don't like to talk. So if I'm in a group of people, and I'm being quiet, please don't call attention to me by saying, "You're quiet tonight. What's going on in your world?" Nothing like putting me on the spot to make me not want to be there.

9. Answer the phone when it rings, or screen calls? Screen calls.

10. VCR or TiVO? Both. TiVo is temporary. Video tapes are for keeps. What I'd really like is the option to download something from my TiVo to a DVD. I suspect that will never happen, though. Too much concern over piracy.

This or That - Breakfast [02/11/03]

[Food | Memes - This or That]

1. Bacon or sausage? Bacon. Incidentally... I just had a BLT. happy

2. Eggs: scrambled or not? Either scrambled or hard boiled. I like to put mild picante sauce or ketchup on my scrambled eggs. I also like omelets or migas. And there was a restaurant I used to go to that had scrambled eggs with cheese and chili on top. That was good.

3. French toast or regular toast? Both! French toast with real butter, powdered sugar and syrup. Dang.. that'll clog your arteries! I also like regular toast with real butter. Especially sourdough toast with real butter. Yummy! But don't give me any wheat toast. Blech!

4. Pancakes or waffles? Either. Chocolate chip pancakes or belgian waffles with strawberries and whipped cream! Or waffles with real butter and some syrup would be okay if getting fancy was out of the question.

5. Muffins or bagels? Both! Cream cheese muffins and bagels with cream cheese. hah! Gotta have the cream cheese!

6. Coffee or tea? Both! But if there's not plenty of half and half to put in the coffee, I'll pass. And if it's flavored coffee... ick.. that gives me a headache. Just plain old coffee with a lot of half and half and some sweet and low. Or a Grande Nonfat With Whip Mocha from Starbucks. Yummy!

7. Juice: orange or grapefruit? I'd prefer grape, but out of those two it would just depend on how I felt that morning.

8. Hot or cold cereal? Cold, definitely.

9. To put in cereal: bananas or strawberries (or some other fruit)? I don't like to put fruit in my cereal, but I'd like to have some strawberries on the side. I'm not a big fan of bananas even though I will eat one occasionally. Especially if I have the stomach flu.

10. Eat breakfast at home or at a restaurant? Either, but I won't get up early to go to a restaurant. If they stop serving breakfast at 11:00 on the weekend, it's not going to happen.

This or That - Sleeping [02/04/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Morning or night person? Neither really... I like to sleep at night and in the morning. So I guess I'm more of a late afternoon person.

2. Heavy or light sleeper? I go through phases. I'm normally a pretty heavy sleeper, but I guess when I'm stressed out about things, I don't sleep as well.

3. Remember your dreams or not? I remember some of them. The easiest ones to remember are the ones I have on weekend mornings. I get up to walk my dog then go back to bed. I dream very vivid dreams during that time.

4. Do you need a lot of sleep, or just a little? I need a lot of it. But when I get too much, I feel depressed.

5. Do you need something like a nightlight or TV to sleep, or do you prefer complete darkness? No light, but I do need some white noise. I use a fan right now.

6. Flannel sheets or some other kind? I like flannel sheets a lot. But it doesn't really matter.

7. One pillow, or more? I have three for my head. Sometimes I sleep on two and hug one. Sometimes I sleep on all three and hug another pillow. But I need at least two for my head.

8. Bedroom door opened or closed at night? Usually open. I kept it closed for a while when I first got my dog to keep her in there, but now that she's house trained, she can go out of the bedroom.

9. Wrap yourself into blankets like a cocoon, or just cover yourself with them? Both. And sometimes I don't have the blanket on top of me at all.

10. Alarm clock: wake to music or buzzer? Music. I used to wake up to a buzzer, but sometimes I would be mid-dream and the buzzing would get in my dream. Instead of waking up, I'd dream that something was buzzing and it would drive me crazy trying to make it stop.

This or That - Potpourri [01/28/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Kleenex or tissue? When I was young, I called it Kleenex. I probably still do sometimes. But I think I mostly call it tissue. I don't have any at home or at work. I use toilet paper. I even have a roll at my desk.

2. Soda or pop? Soda. Never pop.

3. A sandwich on a long roll: sub or hero (or hoagie or grinder, etc)? Sub sammich. But I'll say hero, hoagie or grinder if I'm at a restaurant that calls it that.

4. Glasses or spectacles? Glasses. Never spectacles.

5. TV or television? TV. Lately I've been saying that I watched my TiVo, though. That's not really accurate... I'm watching the TV which is playing stuff that's on TiVo. 6. Movie or film? Sometimes movie. Sometimes film.

7. Sofa or couch? Couch. Sometimes sofa.

8. Stove or range? Stove. Never range.

9. Remote control or clicker? Remote. Never ever clicker. Ugh!

10. Supermarket or grocery store? Grocery. Sometimes (but rarely) Supermarket.

This or That - Potpourri [01/21/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Super Bowl or World Series? Super Bowl over the World Series for sure. I wish football season lasted as long as baseball season. Baseball season never seems to end. tongue

2. Winter or summer? I'm anti-winter, so I'll say summer.

3. Look up numbers in the phone book, or call directory assistance? I look them up in the phone book or on the internet.

4. Mashed potatoes or French fries? If I'm making them myself, then mashed potatoes for sure. If I have a choice at a restaurant, it depends on the main dish or maybe just my mood.

5. Hand-code your website, or use an editor (such as Front Page)? I love Dreamweaver. Especially now since it doesn't screw up the code trying to be helpful as often as it used to. The more an editor tries to be helpful, the worse it is. I used to hand code everything, but there's no use for that torture since Dreamweaver is so great.

6. Freeway or winding country road? Depends where I'm going. Freeway if I'm in a hurry to get there. Winding country road, otherwise.

7. Star Wars or Star Trek? Star Wars, I guess. I liked Star Trek 2 "Wrath of Khan" a lot, though.

8. Disney or Warner Brothers cartoons? Disney.

9. When it feels chilly in the house: crank up the heat or put on a sweater? haha Crank up the heat, baby.

10. CBS or PBS? CBS. smile

This or That - Around the House [01/14/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Window shades or blinds? There are vertical blinds in the living room and mini blinds on the window by the front door. The bedrooms have curtains.

2. Wall or desk calendar? Three wall calendars. Puppies (kitchen), Dolphins (living room) and Kittens (bedroom).

3. Paint or wallpaper? White paint except in the kitchen and bathrooms where there's wallpaper.

4. Electric or gas stove? Electric.

5. Carpeting or bare floors? Carpeting except in the bathrooms, kitchen and entryway. Oh.. and where Lily ripped up the carpet trying to dig out of the bedroom. D'oh!

6. One TV, or more than one? Five TVs. Only 2 get used and only 1 of those gets used a lot.

7. Leather or fabric sofa? Fabric.

8. Eat meals in kitchen or dining room? Yeah, right... in the bedroom at my desk. Sometimes I eat at the dining room table, but that's very rarely.

9. Fabric or vinyl shower curtain? Vinyl.

10. Your kitchen: well-equipped or bare bones? I don't really know how to define a well-equipped kitchen. I have what I need plus some stuff I don't need. I guess that means well-equipped.

This or That - Periodicals [01/07/03]

[Memes - This or That | Reading]

1. "Time" or "Newsweek"? I haven't read either one in so long that I don't know the difference. I'm not greatly interested in either.

2. "Wall Street Journal" or "National Enquirer"? When I was an accounting major in college, I thought it was proper to read Wall Street Journal. I tried. I really really tried to get interested in business stuff. Then I realized... life's too short. Screw the Wall Street Journal. I don't care for the National Enquirer either.

3. "Sports Illustrated" or "Cook's Illustrated"? Sports Illustrated. Specifically the football section. I've never heard of Cook's Illustrated. If I didn't have a 9-5 job (which really equates to leaving the house before 8:00 and getting home after 6:00), I might cook. But I just don't have time.

4. "Martha Stewart Living" or "MAD Magazine"? Good lord. I don't have time for Martha Stewart stuff. And the only thing I like about MAD Magazine is that page that has a picture of something, but when you fold it a certain way, it's a picture of something else. That rocks. Do they still do that? I wouldn't waste my money on the magazine just for that, though.

5. "Cosmopolitan" or "Maxim"? *sticks finger down throat*

6. "People" or "Entertainment Weekly"? Either one, I guess.

7. "National Geographic" or "Readers Digest"? I love the pictures in National Geographic. Man. If I had the time and money and could travel by myself, I'd want to take pictures like that. I like Readers Digest, too. I used to have a subscription when I was a kid. I liked the true stories of tragedies where someone (or a dog or something) saves someone's life. I don't remember the name of that feature, but it was cool.

8. "Good Housekeeping" or "Popular Mechanics"? Popular Mechanics ROCKS!!!! <Eric Cartman Voice>Seriously, you guys!</Eric Cartman Voice> I used to read my Dad's subscription. Of all the magazines listed in these questions, this is the one I'd pay money to get. See... I really do think I'm part man. smile I love the futuristic inventions they put in there. And the concept cars. Good Housekeeping? *yawn*

9. "PC World" or "MacWorld"? I have a PC, so PC World. But I don't get into that whole MAC vs. PC competition that people get into. Get a life.

10. "Southern Living" or "Yankee" (magazine about New England living)? Hmmm... back to my feminine side. Southern Living is awesome with all the pictures of houses inside and out. I look through that book and dream. smile I've never seen Yankee, but if it's the northern version of Southern Living then I would like it just as much.

Post question analysis: Hmmm... some of those questions riled me up.
  • Wall Street Journal reminded me of how much I hate "business" (note that I work for the government). I don't hate "business" as a customer... I hate it as an employee.
  • Cook's Illustrated reminded me how much I hate that I don't have time to cook. That's not really true... I have time, but I don't want to do it unless I can relax and enjoy it. You gotta have lots of time to plan meals, grocery shop, cook and clean. I just don't have time to do that *and* relax *and* enjoy life.
  • PC/Mac World reminded me how much I hate that "PC is better than MAC/MAC is better than PC" competitive conversation that people get into. Urgle! I could strangle people who get into that conversation. What a waste of time.
'kay... I guess I have issues to work through. haha The only magazines I subscribe to are "Home Recording" and some entertainment magazine that started coming to the house all of a sudden. Home Recording is okay, but I'm cancelling it because I don't get a whole lot out of it. If it concentrated on recording vocals, I would get more out of it. Maybe. It would probably get too technical. I think I accidently clicked something I shouldn't have on the internet and started getting that entertainment magazine. I need to cancel that, too.
