It's Anti-Procrastination Day! [07/30/03]

[Anti-Procrastination]

It's another Anti-Procrastination Day! Today I am doing something I've been putting off for a long time... doing nothing! After work, I just slouched around and watched TV. I needed the break!

Great Mail Day! [07/29/03]

[Great Mail Day!]

Today was a great mail day. I got two CDs (Train and Radiohead), two RDRAM memory modules, and two, I mean one, camera bag for my camera.

I can't tell you how the CDs are yet because I need to listen to them in the car. I put the Train CD on here at home, but I was too distracted by other things. It was good background music, though.

The memory modules are awesome. I plopped them into my computer and now I have 384 MB of RAM instead of 128 MB. I know it's not top of the charts in RAM, but it's much better than before. Hopefully, things won't get so hairy when I have several applications open. I'm a chronic multi-tasker, you know.

The camera bag is great. I needed a bigger one to fit my camera, lenses, filter, batteries, and battery charger. I don't want to forget my battery charger when I go on vacation like one who shall remain nameless did when she went to Las Vegas. I shall learn from her oopsy. (Now watch... I'll forget the whole dang camera or something. Ack!)

In other news... some Texas Democratic Senators ran away again to avoid redistricting. This time to New Mexico. Jerks. But the Republicans are pissing me off, too. I haven't seen the latest map they're trying to pass, but the last one I saw split Austin into three districts. The effect is that some Austinites would most likely be represented by someone from San Antonio. Other Austinites would most likely be represented by someone close to Houston. Of course, they are doing it because it will get them more Republican representatives in Congress. They don't even deny it. They should really get an unbiased independent person to draw the gosh darn map.

Rent Reduction [07/28/03]

[Woo-Hoo!]

Wow... my landlord is reducing the rent next month. That doesn't happen very often. Woo-Hoo!

Done with 26 Things! [07/27/03]

[What's Going On?]

Woo-Hoo! Except for a little bit of tweaking, I'm done with the 26 Things project. I used the Dreamweaver/Fireworks photo album feature to build the skeleton. Now I'm customizing the pages, so they have the same look as the rest of my site.

I'll have it ready by August 1st!

Damn... It's already 9:00 p.m. Sunday night. Where did the weekend go?!!!?!!?

Lily the Attack Dog [07/26/03]

[LilyDawg]

At around 7:15 a.m. yesterday morning, a man came by the house to check the insulation in the attic and measure the square footage of my house. My landlord is getting estimates to put in more insulation. It should save me some money on my electric bill. Yay!

Anyway... Lily reacts differently to everyone. Sometimes she's meek and hides. Sometimes she's real friendly. And sometimes she barks. When the guy got here, she started barking. And barking. And barking.

I kept telling her to shush, and the guy was talking to her to try to win her over, but she still barked. When he started to measure, the noise from the measuring tape freaked her out a little bit. That and how he was walking all over the house.

At one point, he was walking from the bedroom to the living room. In my house, that means he was walking toward where the phone is. Then the phone started ringing. That freaked me out! I hate it when the phone rings. But I started running for the phone which to Lily looked like I was running at the guy. So she decided if Momma was going to attack the guy, she would attack, too!! She snapped at his leg. Luckily he had jeans on, so she didn't get her teeth into him, but it scared him.

So now, I have a scared man, yelling, "He bit me! He bit me!" (he didn't realize Lily is a girl). I have a dog who is completely freaking out. And the phone is ringing! Ack Ack Ack!

I grabbed Lily with one hand and the phone with the other. She stopped barking, thank goodness. And I'm happy to report that there was no further excitement. Whew.

It's Anti-Procrastination Day! [07/23/03]

[Anti-Procrastination]

Yay! It's anti-procrastination day again! Today, I'm going to open my desktop computer and see what kind of memory is in there, so I can get some more. I really hate opening my computer because I'm scared I'll screw something up, so I've been avoiding it.

What's on my pet peeve list right now? [07/23/03]

[What's On [blank]?]

What's On Now?
What's on my pet peeve list right now?

  • how the tech industry uses the word "solution" to mean a program or set of programs.
  • when I'm on the elevator and we've waited what seems like minutes for the doors to close. Then when they finally start to, someone sticks their arm in and makes them open again so they can get on.
  • how the tech industry uses the word "integrated." I could care less if it's "integrated." What the hell does the program (oh... I mean SOLUTION) do?
  • when I'm talking to someone and someone else walks up and interrupts. even worse, when they start by saying, "I hate to interrupt, but...."
  • how the tech industry and scholars uses the word "robust." *[see discussion below]
  • when a cashier gives me my change by putting the bills flat on my palm, and the coins on top of the bills. The only way to get the coins in my coin purse are to aim them at my coin purse and slide them off the bills. About half the time a coin or two falls to the ground.
  • when the cable modem service goes down or gets slow!
  • when I tell someone something and they say something dismissive.
  • when I have to repeat my order at the drive through because the person didn't pay attention after they said "May I help you?"
  • women who either put their makeup on in the car or in the bathroom at work.
  • tailgaters
*I did a search for "what does robust mean?" I know what the dictionary says, but I wanted to see what people say they mean when they use the term. I got some great answers. I still don't know what it means. Here's what I found:

What does it mean to have a “robust” review process for contracts?
Authorities should make sure that the programme for reviewing contracts is in line with ODPM guidance on interim contracts, issued on 13 December 2002. This sets out that all contracts should be transparent and applied equally to all services. It should focus first on strategic relevance – we are aware that many services have sprung up recently which may not be in line with the priorities of the Supporting People strategy and other related strategies such as those on crime reduction and health improvement. Equally, however, there are services which have been established for some time, and are equally in need of strategic focus. And many services have costs associated with them which require a more in depth analysis than has been previously possible.[link (MSWord Doc)]

What does "Robustness" mean? Is a stable system always robust?
Zhipu Jin, 02-09-30
When discussing a feedback control system, we must aware that no mathematical model can exactly model a physical system. We concern about how modelling errors might adversely affect the performance of a control system. Suppose there is a model p belonging to a set P, any other model in set P can be viewed as the model p plus a kind of modelling error. A feedback control system is called robust with respect to stability if this feedback can make every model in P stable. Obviously, the notion of robustness is only valid for a certain model set. If a feedback control system is stable, we cannot say that this feedback is always robust for any kinds of modelling uncertainty. [link no long active]

So, just what does “robust” mean? “The concept of robustness is not well defined,” [editor's note: HAHAHAHAHAHA!] said Dewey. “I suppose in simple terms robustness could be defined as ‘small world theories of social interaction’ well known to high school students. Imagine a small, tight, quite unique clique of individuals with each member of the clique knowing someone in another, equally unique clique. Each member of each clique retains their so-called cliqueishness but yet engages in active global – or outside the clique - interactions. This allows for robust interactions and communications across an entire network. But small worlds are very simple compared to biological networks,” said Dewey. [link]

Just some things... [07/22/03]

[Just Some Stuff]

Just some things:
  • I lost 6 pounds since Thursday on my low carb diet.
  • The word "troop" is kinda weird. Or maybe it's just the way reporters use it. A troop is a group of soldiers, boy scouts, girl scouts, and really any other people if they choose to call their group a troop. So "troops" would be multiple groups of people. But if a couple of soldiers are killed, it is reported that 2 troops were killed. But they never say 1 troop was killed. That would mean a whole bunch of soldiers. In this case, I guess, 1 troop is more people than 2 troops. Pretty counterintuitive if you ask me.
  • Pork rinds with cream cheese. Mmmmmmmm.
  • Tomorrow is anti-procrastination day! Yay!
  • "If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain & bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself." --Max Ehrmann
  • There are no Diet Root Beers or Diet RC Colas in the building where I work. At least, I haven't found any.
  • Hamburgers at the Texas Capitol are a little better than hamburgers in the William B. Travis Building. But both are much better than hamburgers in the LBJ Building.
  • My nose tickles.

4. High Speed Internet-Cable or DSL? I have cable.

5. Women: 1-piece bathing suit or Bikini? The last one I wore was a 1-piece. I never liked bikinis, though, because I like to dive in and the bottoms come off when I do that. blush

6. To be fair--Men: Boxers or briefs? Spongebob wears briefs.

7. Beer or Liquor/Wine? I rarely drink, but I like margaritas on the rocks. I've been known to do a tequila shot once in a while, too. I don't like beer, but I like a good imported raspberry ale.

8. Coke or Mountain Dew? Coke. But I like that new Mountain Dew Livewire (or whatever it's called). None of that stuff is on my diet, though.

9. In honor of my 10/18/03 nuptials: Morning or Afternoon/Night Wedding? Good lord... no way I'd want to do that in the morning. Afternoon would be best, I think.

10. Carpet or Hardwood Floors? I've always liked carpet, but I kinda like tile with big area rugs, too.

11. American cars or foreign? I'm not partial.

12. Cutest TV Twin: Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen? I dunno.

13. Coffee: Caffeinated or Decaf? Boo Hoo. I'm trying to kick my caffeine addiction, so I've been drinking decaf. It's actually not that bad if I make it weak and put a lot of cream in it.

14. Thought-Provoking Question of the Week: Computers: Do they make life better or worse? Why? Computers make our lives better. If someone's life is worse, it's not the computer's fault.

I'm feelin' fine! [07/19/03]

[What's Going On?]

Oklee Doklee... My headache is gone! It was gone by the time I got up this morning. I had a little tummy ache midday and figured out I couldn't take my Lemon-Lime Alka Seltzer because it has too much citric acid and that would counteract the low carb diet. Boo Hoo. I love drinking that stuff because it's good for my tummy, has aspirin, and makes me burp! But I took some pepto instead and felt better immediately.

The repair man looked at my a/c today and said he couldn't find anything wrong. He showed me how to clean the coil with a water hose. He thought maybe it was so dirty that it was causing the unit to not work as well. It's been cooler in here today, but the a/c has been running constantly. The repair guy also said there's barely any insulation in the attic. So I told my landlord that. Maybe he'll put some more in. That would be awesome, because I'm sure it would save money on my electric bill year round.

Have you ever had pork rinds with cream cheese? I had some today. Yummy! I'm glad I like it because it's the only crunchy snack I can have. I miss fritos scoops!

I still have a remnant of the headache from earlier today. It could come back... sometimes they do. As the day went on today, I started feeling sweaty. "Oh no," I thought, "I'm getting even more sick." But no... I looked at my thermostat... 80 degrees. Something is wrong with my air conditioner. Joy. mad

Ugh... Diet and Sickness [07/18/03]

[What's Going On?]

I stayed home from work today. Ugh. I started a lo carb diet Wednesday afternoon, and yesterday I got a headache that got worse throughout the day. It kept me up most of the night. And I *still* have it! Gak! I've read that some people get headaches the first 2-3 days on a lo carb diet. But I get headaches just like this every so often anyway, so I don't know if it's the diet or just regular old me.

Anyway... the diet is okay. Some things are disappointing, but it's not as restrictive as a low fat diet. This morning, I had 3 scrambled eggs with green peppers and cheese and 2 sausage patties. Tonight, I'm going to have LoCarb Chili with ground beef, hot dogs, mushrooms, green peppers, salsa, chili powder and garlic. I'm not sure why it has hot dogs. Maybe to take the place of the beans. Oh... I get to put shredded cheese on it, too. Woohoo!

I'm not supposed to have any caffiene for 2 weeks. That's probably what's causing the headache... withdrawal. But after that, I can have a little. I can't wait to be able to drink real coffee again. happy

I just wish this stoopid headache would go away. sick

Crikey... I won't be using the internet at Starbucks! [07/16/03]

[Computer Stuff]

I see people with their notebook computers at Starbucks all the time. I always assume they're on the internet, but of course, they might just be working on other things. It made me curious, though, how one would connect to the internet at Starbucks. What I found out surprised me!

You have to get a T-Mobile Hotspot account. I'm not one to expect stuff for free just because it's internet related, but the cost of this seemed incredibly high. You have to pay $29/month for unlimited access with a year commitment. Or if you want to go month-to-month, it's $39/month.

Then there's a "by the minute" plan: ten cents a minute, but it's a $6.00 minimum per session. So if you only get on for a minute to check your email, you have to pay $6.00!

Or you can prepay $50 for 300 minutes (that's 16.66 cents per minute), and have a minimum per session of $1.60.

Augh! I bet if you're a corporation and negotiate for a bunch of accounts, it's cheaper. But sheesh... it's a helluva lot of money for us little guys. You won't find me sitting in Starbucks surfing the internet. tongue

It's Anti-Procrastination Day! [07/16/03]

[Anti-Procrastination]

It's Anti-Procrastination Day! Last week, I decided to fix the songs on my website that are hosted on 1Sound.com. I started that project, but didn't finish. I considered resuming that, but I have a more pressing matter, I think. I need to clean up some of the files on my server to make space. So I'll work on that tonight.

The other thing I need to stop procrastinating is exercise. I started exercising a while back, and then stopped when my knees and hips got achey. I need to start back up again, but take it a little bit easier. Maybe I'll go outside and walk about the time the sun goes down. It's usually not terribly hot then. I had been walking on my treadmill, but I need some spray lubricant for the tread. I think I'd rather walk outside right now anyway.

What are you procrastinating?

Dream Journal - Meetings and Robert DeNiro [07/15/03]

[Dream Journal]

A dream about meetings, a tornado and Robert DeNiro:

I was in a meeting at work. Then I realized in 10 minutes, I had to go to another meeting with the division directors, Ken and Suzy. So I waited about 5 minutes and told the person who was leading the current meeting that I had to go to the other meeting. She looked at me funny. My interpretation was that because I was on loan to her section, she thought I should go to the meeting Ken and Suzy was having with her section instead of my real section. So I asked, "Oh, should I wait and go with this section?" She said, "No."

So I went to the other meeting. I was one of the first ones there. I sat down and that's when I realized the person leading that other meeting *was* Suzy. D'oh! That's why she looked at me strange. I told everyone who was in the room so far what I had done.

I had to go get a pencil before the meeting started. When I came back, they were singing Happy Birthday to someone. I saw some people carrying a cake into the room, so I went to help them. There was a cake already in the room, and I was helping carry another really tall skinny cake. As we were setting it down, the cake toppled, and I tried to catch it. My left hand ended up on the other cake. Someone said, "It's okay, there's already a clown where your hand is." I looked under my hand, and sure enough, there was a picture of a clown.

The next thing I knew, Suzy was waking me up. I had fallen asleep right there at the cakes. I was embarrassed because everyone saw me.

Then everyone was looking out the back window. There were fast moving dark clouds with red and orange in them. We all thought we were going to have a tornado. So I ran to the middle of the house (we were in a house now). I stood in a doorway. I could see outside, and saw tornadoes forming. Sometimes it was very colorful like an acid trip (or how I think one would be). Sometimes it was just regular looking hard rain.

We fully expected the house to be torn down or damaged, but nothing happened, and the storm passed.

We went back to the meeting room. I sat down, but I wasn't feeling happy. Robert DeNiro was sitting next to me, so he held my hand. I was thinking that I should blog about how it feels good for Robert DeNiro to hold your hand when you're down, but I realized no one would believe that I knew Robert DeNiro.

After the meeting, I drove to a house where there was supposed to be a party. I parked, but something happened, and I had to drive somewhere else and come back. I was unhappy that I would lose my parking place, but when I got back, it was still there.

Inside the party, all I remember is that it was being held by snobby people. I don't remember what happened, but I know I wasn't part of the "in" crowd.

5ive Minute Stories - Flavour [07/14/03]

[Memes - 5MS]

<5iveminute word="flavour">How awful it must be to be the flavor of the day and know you're the flavor of the day. I mean... today is your day and then that's it. In less than 24 hours, it's all gone. All that attention and then BAM... some other flavor takes your place.

What if you were the flavor of the day, and no one picked you? Like if you were liver flavored ice cream. There would be a big sign that read: "FLAVOR OF THE DAY: LIVER" You'd feel proud, and you would be so excited with the anticipation of the store opening. But then no one would pick you because you're, you know... liver flavored. Maybe a few people would pick you. Like fans of liver ice cream. But only if the proprietor had the foresight to provide grilled onion topping.

Durn... two spoons [07/14/03]

[Food]

Ack! I went across the street for some food to go and when I got back to my desk to eat it, I discovered I got two spoons instead of a spoon and a fork. So I'm eating fried boneless chicken breast, green beans and mashed potatoes with a spoon. After that, I'll eat some chocolate cake with a spoon. I always feel like a little kid when I eat with a spoon. But at least it's not a spork. I always stab myself with those things.

Ralphy the Dragon [07/13/03]

[Gossip]

RalphyThis is Ralphy. He's Boogaboo's pet dragon. Sometimes when Boogaboo and I would have some hot tea, I would squeeze some lime in my tea and give the lime peels to Ralphy. Ralphy loves lime peels! Then Ralphy learned how to make tea from the lime peels. Now sometimes Ralphy will make me some lime peel tea. Yummy!

Boogaboo hangs out at Hidden Soul.

Ralphy is a green dragon. I found out what color my inner dragon is. See:

I took the Inner Dragon online quiz and found out I am a Blue Dragon on the inside. If there ever was a draconic example of a supple attitude, my Inner Dragon is it. Blues are the Water Elemental dragon - typified by their Steam breath weapon. Pretty creative, huh? It goes right along with my Inner Dragon's tendency to maim, but not destroy. Much like my native oceans and rivers will deform the rock over time, eventually wearing it away to nothing.

Humans shouldn't make the mistake of thinking I'm weak, however. After all I'm a good 30 feet in length and have a penchant for materializing out of any body of water, no matter how small. I also enjoy communicating with aquatic life-forms, hunting in totally inhospitable terrain (i.e. 3000 feet below the waves), and using my fluid nature to my advantage. My enemies probably won't even see me approach in the first place. My favorable attributes are the sunset, Autumn, water, compassion, intuition, and calmness. Naturally, I pity the fool who'd try and prove that calmness part, he'd probably wind up being scalded. *small grin*
So from a blue dragon to a green dragon... Cheers, Ralphy!

My Uncle Richard [07/12/03]

[Memories]

Me and Uncle RichardLast weekend, when I was going through some stuff I brought back from my storage room, I found a letter that my Uncle Richard sent my Dad a couple of years before I was born. The picture is me with my Uncle Richard in my Dad's big black recliner (click it to see a bigger one).

The letter was fun to read. It starts off, "It seems a talent small, to my surprise has materialized, and may for all be, a blessing in disguise." Uncle Richard had started writing poetry.

Here's one of his poems:

It seems to me, that you and I
Could build a ladder to the sky.
We would start with heaps of things,

Update to my vacation dilemma [07/11/03]

[What's Going On?]

Here's an addendum to my previous post whining about vacations....

I went to lunch with my friend John. I always like to whine to him because he gives me the best advice. His advice....

JUST DO IT AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE MONEY!!!

Woo-Hoo!!! I need to figure out where to go, but I think I'll make the dog boarding reservations tonight. smile

All this talk of vacations is depressing me... [07/11/03]

[What's Going On?]

I've been thinking a lot about vacations. I keep hearing people asking other people what they are doing for vacation this year... as if it's a given that everyone takes a vacation every year. In fact, a guy is in the next cubicle aisle right now asking each person, "Have you taken your vacation yet? Where are you going?" Thank goodness I don't know that guy because I think if he asked me, I'd just break down and cry or something.

Don't get me wrong... I could take a vacation. But everytime someone brings it up, I feel a little more upset. The more I think about it, I think I have some kind of block that keeps me from planning one even though I'd love to go somewhere. It's a personal problem, plain and simple.

I think back on all the trips I've taken and realize that I've never paid for an entire trip on my own. And each one has presented itself to me either in the way of someone else suggesting it/inviting me or because I had free plane tickets and hotel stays burning holes in my pockets. Use them or lose them, ya know?

Here's a summary of my vacations:

Trips that my parents (or other family) paid for:
  • visit relatives in Oklahoma
  • visit relatives in Oregon
  • Texas Tour (tour bus trip around Texas with other junior high kids)
Trips paid for by church or school fund-raising:
  • San Antonio
  • New Braunfels
  • Colorado
  • New Orleans, Ft. Walton beach, Orlando
Trips I barely paid anything for:
  • Jacksonville, Daytona - spring break.. me and my friend drove, and we stayed at my friend's brother's apartment
  • New Orleans and Natchez, MS - my friend's mother drove, and I think I paid for my hotel
  • Carlsbad and White Sands, NM - I was already in El Paso for my job, so I only had to pay for gas to get from El Paso to New Mexico and back
Trips I used free airline tickets and hotel rooms that I earned from frequent traveling on my job:
  • San Diego/LA
  • Seattle, Vancouver, Portland
  • Ohio and Niagara Falls
See? I've never had to pay for much on any of the trips I've taken, and each one presented itself to me in some way. The Akron, Niagara Falls trip was the last one I took in 1997. I haven't been on a trip since then.

Now... I don't want you to think I *expect* other people to pay for my vacations. What I'm saying is that since I've never had to pay for my own, I'm having a real hard time initiating one on my own.

So... if I want to take a vacation, I guess I've gotta suck it up and take it in the pocketbook. Plane fare, hotel, rental car, dog boarding (my parents used to keep my dog, but they're gone now). Ugh. I'd have to dip into my savings. I need that money for other things. Blah. It's depressing.

How the heck do you people afford to take vacations every year? sick

This is an old entry, but I'm reviving it because I'd still like to do it. I'll probably use pictures I've already put in my picture blog.

What's on My Living Room Wall? [07/09/03]

What's on my living room wall right now?

I took a picture again this week because I am so proud of this. It's a Mola made by the Kuna Indians in Panama. Molas are pictures made out of layers of cloth... textile folk art. A professor I worked for in college brought it back from a trip.

It's Anti-Procrastination Day! [07/09/03]

[Anti-Procrastination]

It's that time again... Anti-Procrastination Day! I knocked a few things off my procrastination list this last weekend. What's come over me that I can't even put things off until the proper day!? nerd

Today, I'm going to work on my Songs website. Some of the songs won't play for some of the people who try. So I'm going to fix them! Rock!

It's Spike TV, not Spike Lee TV [07/08/03]

[Television]

Spike Lee and Spike TV have settled. I'm amazed that anyone took Spike Lee seriously in this. How does someone get such a big head that he thinks anything named "Spike" is capitalizing on his name. Spike isn't even his real name. Loser.

On a related note... I heard a while back that Johnny and Edgar Winter were suing {errrr... The Matrix people} because those twins in The Matrix Reloaded are named Johnny and Edgar Autumn. Now... I admit that it's probably more than a coincidence. The names and the pale skin of the twins are too much to think otherwise. But tell me this... how many of you went to see the movie because you like Johnny and Edgar Winter and wanted to see what you thought was the next best thing? I don't see any hands. Did you not understand the question? Oh... NONE of you went to see the movie because of your admiration of Johnny and Edgar Winter? Case closed.

This or That - Summer Potpourri [07/08/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Strawberries or blueberries? Strawberries.

2. "Legally Blonde 2" or "Terminator 3"? Terminator 3, definitely.

3. Hamburgers or hot dogs? If they're made on a grill, I'll take the hot dogs. If they're made on the stove, I'd love a hamburger (medium rare). smile

4. Boating or hiking? Shoot... if I had a choice, I'd go boating.

5. Suntan lotion or sunblock? I'd like something with some protection, but will let me get some color, too.

6. "Big Brother" or "The Amazing Race"? I've not seen either, but I suspect I would rather see "The Amazing Race."

7. Beach Boys or Jimmy Buffett? Probably Jimmy Buffett, but can we watch it on TV? I don't want to go to an outdoor concert. And come to think of it... if we're going to watch TV, can we watch something else? I've got a lot of good movies on my TiVo and if I don't watch them, they'll get deleted. 8. Grow your own produce or buy from supermarket/greengrocer/farm stand? Buy it from the supermarket.

9. Drive with car windows/top down, or with air-conditioning on? Air conditioning, most of the time.

10. Go away for vacation, or stay at home? *sigh* Stay home, I guess.

5ive Minute Stories - Silky [07/07/03]

[Memes - 5MS]

<5iveminute word="silky">Today she seemed frantic. Pauly hadn't seen his great grandmother upset like this since she'd lost that photograph of Bristol, her childhood canine companion. She eventually found it, but it seemed she couldn't focus on much of anything until she held it in her hands again.

Grams was always losing one thing or another. But she seemed to remember everything she ever had. Not like Pauly... if something was out of sight, it was out of mind. No telling how many things he'd lost and forgotten.

She was going through the cedar chest in her closet and mumbling something about her late husband.

"Grams, what are you looking for?" Pauly asked.

"It's here somewhere. I know it is. He would have wanted to wear it today. It was his favorite," she replied, pulling handkerchiefs and china dolls and old greeting cards in brittle envelopes from the chest and setting them on the floor behind her.

"Who, Grams?"

"Why, your great grandfather, of course. It would be his 90th birthday today."

Pauly never knew his great grandfather. He had died shortly before Pauly was born 12 years ago. But Grams had told him much, and he had seen plenty of old pictures. The thing that struck Pauly was how his great grandfather was always so well dressed. Hat, suit and tie. Every time.

"Here it is!" Grams cried with a great squeal of relief. She rubbed the silky blue tie across her cheek, closed her eyes and said, "Happy Birthday, my love."

Friday Five - Children's Stories [07/04/03]

[Memes - Friday Five]

friday five
1. What were your favorite childhood stories? I remember my mom reading me Raggedy Ann and Andy stories. I also liked Cat in the Hat books. I always wanted those pop up books, too, but I don't think I ever got any. 2. What books from your childhood would you like to share with [your] children? Any of them, I guess. 3. Have you re-read any of those childhood stories and been surprised by anything? No.

4. How old were you when you first learned to read? I don't remember.

5. Do you remember the first 'grown-up' book you read? How old were you? I'm trying to remember, but I really don't. Probably something for school. Maybe "The Hobbit."

A very productive couple of days [07/03/03]

[Shaping Up]

Wow... I've gotten so much done the past couple of days! As I wrote yesterday, I was going to take some old antifreeze to the household hazardous waste facility yesterday after work. I was a little worried it would be hard to find, or they wouldn't take the antifreeze. But it was great! It was a drive-through facility and a guy came right up to my car and took the antifreeze with no problem. Woo-Hoo! And as I was driving away, I found something to take a picture of for the 26 Things project.

Then this morning, I went by a computer recycling place to drop off the two old computers and monitor that have been cluttering up my house for several years. That place was a little hard to find, but I was persistent and was able to dump those things off before noon.

The Hobbit Book ReportThe coolest part of the day, though, was that I finished clearing out my storage room at UHaul. Yippee!! That's money in the bank, Baybay!!! It took me two trips, and I brought home around 14 boxes. There were 4 boxes of Christmas decorations, 3.5 boxes of vinyl records, a box with stuff that belonged to my mother and her family, and more boxes full of stuff from my childhood and college days. That hobbit picture is a book report I did in junior high. I threw the report away, but not before taking a picture of the wonderful cover I drew. laugh Dang... my drawing skills are so lame. The sad thing is... I don't think I could draw as well as that now!

Anyway... I still have a long way to go to get my house decluttered, but I'm getting there. And now I have a holiday weekend ahead of me to rest and play! I hope you all have a great holiday weekend if you celebrate July 4th! Party

What's on Wednesday - TiVo [07/03/03]

[What's On TiVo?]

Ugh.. I'm so disappointed... I told TiVo to record a bunch of things, but didn't watch the things that were already on there first. So TiVo deleted a bunch of stuff this week (as you can see by the strikeouts). frown Oh well... I still have lots of good stuff to watch. smile What's on TiVo?

It's Anti-Procrastination Day! So today, after work, I'm going to the hazardous waste collection center and drop off some old antifreeze. I hope I can find the place easily. I have a map, but sometimes you get to a place like that, and it's just an old warehouse, and you're afraid to go in any of the doors. I also hope they will take the antifreeze with no problem.

This or That - Summer Fun [07/01/03]

[Memes - This or That]

1. Lemonade or Ice Cold Beer? Lemonade, please.

2. Swimming pool or beach? Which one is less crowded? I'd prefer the swimming pool if neither one is crowded.

3. Long weekends here and there, or a 2-week vacation? The fantasy is to have both. The reality is that I love taking time off too much to ever save up enough leave time to take a 2-week vacation. When I worked as a state auditor, though, I used to earn lots of comp time while traveling, so I was able to take month long vacations. That was awesome.

4. Destination: Acapulco or Hawaii? Hawaii, of course. My friend Peppermint Tina is there. smile

5. Destination: Mountains or Beach? I don't care anymore... I'd just like a vacation.

6. Hotel/motel/B&B or camping? Hotel/motel/B&B

7. Carefully planned vacation, or play it by ear? I like a little of both. If there's no plan, the things I want to do won't get done or will get botched. But it's fun to have some extra time to just mess around at will, too.

8. Sneakers or sandals? Sneakers. Definitely sneakers.

9. Air-conditioning or fans? Ugh.. air-conditioning.

10. Concerts in the park or baseball games? As much as I hate baseball, I'd rather go to a baseball game than a concert in the park. How about a concert at the indoor baseball stadium. I like that idea. smile
