Halloween Kids [10/31/02]

[Holidays]

halloween kids
This is the first year I've handed candy out to kids. I'm usually anti-social... hiding in the back of the house with all the lights out in the front. But I've met some of the kids in the neighborhood while out walking Lily, so I decided to participate this year. I had a really fun time. Maybe next year, I'll even dress up. smile

Rob's Random Poem Generator [10/30/02]

[Linkage | Sunday Sonnet]

I got a fun link from Pam's Blog. Automatically generate poetry from a website. You can do it over and over until you get something you really like. I got the following short one from my blog:
Yay a fundraiser for lyrics. 19. Bath or strawberries? strawberries. strawberries. strawberries.
Here's a longer one:
Yay The extra large: medium, large, extra large? extra large oh yeah.. then the Leader of the street sign from me several times, but they cold at work to vote? Yes.14. Would have cable? Yes.11.
And another:
Yay a dimwit for Buttercup. I put them 1. But Emmitt Smith is having the same blue dress up Pete Townsend Pet Mullet the name comes from a bold;:margin: 20px;tongueyline {: Verdana, Arial, ; 11px;} a.diet, I know all time you imagine? not too No 42. Numbers in Sports [10/30/02]

[Sports]

I was reading this on jimmyz28's blog the other day. It's about whether we focus on numbers too heavily in sports. He used it to talk about Nascar. I don't know anything about Nascar except what I read in Jimmy's blog, so I'm going to skip on back to football.

It stems from an ESPN.com article about Emmitt Smith's rushing record. The main point is "having the most doesn't necessarily make you the best." I wonder who is arguing the other side of that? I kinda think most people would agree. And I'm an accountant type, so I place a lot of emphasis on numbers. However, good accountants know that the numbers aren't the end... they are a means to an end. A tool to help make decisions.

I can understand having the discussion, though... it's thought provoking and interesting. No.. the numbers themselves should never be the only thing driving a decision on who is the "best" at anything. But why bring this up just after Emmitt breaks the record? I can only think that the motivation is to somehow make Emmitt's feat seem less than it is. Okay... whatever. You made your point ESPN dude.

So I started thinking about numbers and how they affect team standings each year. I know more about college football than pro, so here goes...

I don't think we're all that bogged down in numbers. If we were, the top two teams in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) rankings would have been undefeated the last 2 years, no? The last two years, we didn't even have undefeated teams in the national championship game because of the way the BCS ranks teams. And people gripe about that. But wouldn't that be pandering to the numbers? I'm not defending the BCS... there's going to be problems with any system with that much subjectivity.

The USA Today poll and the ESPN Coaches poll don't pander to the numbers either. It's based on people voting. So it's pretty subjective, too. No number pandering there (except to the extent that the voters rely on the numbers).

But it got me thinking... why are we even bogged down in the numbers in individual games? Hey... why not have the winner of a game be the *best* team instead of the team with the most points at the end? And why is a touchdown worth from 6 to 8 points? Why is a field goal worth 3? Why don't we just have some judges decide the winner after the game instead of the scoreboard? Yeah.. then we can get away from all those dang numbers.

Then again... if we didn't have numbers (scores, rushing yards, passing yards, etc.), maybe the teams and the individual players wouldn't have goals. It's harder to do well without defineable goals. And numbers are the easiest way to define a goal.

So I think it's okay to have all those numbers. And I can't wait to see who breaks Emmitt's record. But I really hope it's someone who plays for the Houston Texans next time. smile

Swing Low Sweet Chariot [10/28/02]

[Music - My New Releases]

lucidityI did a vocal for a Caribbean version of "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" (can you imagine?) not too long ago. It's now available on CM's new CD, Lucidity. This CD consists of CM's collaborations with artists all over the world including Bob Johnson, Jeza, Bob Gaynor, Lord Bygon, Bill Farrish, Steve Arms and Q a e. The song I sang on is not available to listen to on the internet, but CM has three of the other songs available for previewing at CD Baby.

Things on my mind this morning [10/28/02]

[Just Some Stuff | Sports]

Some things I was thinking about this morning:
  • I've decided to support Chris Simms (UT Quarterback). Up until now, I've not really backed him like I should. Last year there was a quarterback controversy between him and Major Applewhite, and it was natural to pick one over the other. But this year there isn't a controversy. I need to let it go. He's our man, and it's gotta be tough trying to do well knowing some of the fans don't like him. Go Chris!
  • If you're going to leave your desk, take your cell phone with you. No one wants to hear it ringing over and over even if it has a groovy cool ring·tone. (This is not a "note to self." I don't even own a cell phone).
  • I'm not a Dallas Cowboy fan, but Emmitt Smith is a class act. I just happened to turn on the TV right before he broke that pro football rushing record. It was an emotional moment. It reminded me of when Ricky Williams broke the NCAA rushing record. Yay, Emmitt!

Dream Journal - War and My Childhood Neighborhood [10/27/02]

[Dream Journal]

I was using my brother's computer. I think he was out of town. I was working on some kind of spreadsheet. There were 2 or 3 other people there. One helped me format the spreadsheet a different way to make it easier to enter stuff. Then something was happening outside. Bruce (a guy I work with) was one of the other 2 people. He said we needed to get out of there. I said I needed to pack some things. He and the other person left without me. I didn't blame them, though, because I knew I should have left when they did. I got a couple small bags packed. I also filled the insides of my shoes with cherry slush. I put them on. They weren't cold at all, but they were the most comfortable shoes ever.

I started running through the streets with my bags. I saw some Southwest Airlines (SWA) planes in the air, but they kept going down. Then I was running by a big field. I saw another SWA plane flying by me with another plane on its tail shooting at it. The SWA plane went down in the field. Then there was another SWA plane headed my way with another plane behind it. That SWA plane went down, too. Then the plane behind it started shooting at the people on the street. I didn't get shot.

I ran down a street and saw some people crawl into some shutters on the side of a building. So I passed my bags through the shutters and then went in myself. It was dark. As soon as I put one of my bags in, someone grabbed it and started taking food out of it and eating.

After I got in there, I noticed we were now on the back of a truck. The bed of the truck was very high. I looked down at the driver, and he was wearing a gas mask. I can't remember if I jumped out of the truck or we tipped it over.

There was stuff that happened before that, but I only remember bits and pieces. I know "we" hired a band (don't know who we is). I think a guy proposed to me (but I wasn't even sure in the dream if he really did). I don't know who the guy was, but I knew him in the dream. All in all, the whole dream made me feel tense and a little scared.

I had another dream after that.

I was staying with someone who lived 3 streets down from the street I grew up on. I was walking up and down the streets. I think for exercise and just to see what the houses looked like so many years later. As I walked past a tree, a guy standing in front of it called out to me. He was Greg Kay, the boy who lived a street or two over from me when I was a kid. I asked him if he was Greg Kay, and he confirmed. I told him I was Kim Novak. But he said he didn't remember me. I noticed they had changed the names of some of the streets. I don't think they had changed the name of the street I grew up on, but I could only see the street sign from a distance.

50 Things About Me [10/26/02]

[About Me]

I've started to do 100 things about me several times, but never get very far. I seem to focus on things I don't like and it makes for a negative list. tongue I'll keep trying, though.

I was cruising blogs the other day, though, and found 50 things on Christine's blog. It's 50 questions to answer. That wasn't so tough. So here we go:

1. Your name spelled backwards. mik.

2. Where were your parents born? My dad was born in Tennessee, but his parents were on vacation there when he was born. He grew up in Oklahoma. My mom was born in Oklahoma.

3. What is the last thing you downloaded onto your computer? Blogamp Plug-in.

4. What's your favorite restaurant? Romeo's, Austin, TX.

5. Last time you swam in a pool? Summer, 2001.

6. Have you ever been in a school play? Yes.. I was one of Sir Joseph's cousins in HMS Pinafore. I tried out for the chorus, but when she heard me sing, she asked me to try out for Buttercup. I didn't get the role, but I did get an onstage role. Robbie Kidd was either Sir Joseph or Captain Corcoran. I don't remember. Rick Rutledge was Dick Deadeye. I don't remember many details (and I had to look up the character names on the internet), but those stick in my head. I had to wear a blue dress and carry an umbrella covered with the same blue material. smile

7. How many kids do you want? None unless I marry someone rich and can stay home with the kids.

8. Type of music you dislike most? That's tough... there's good and bad in every type of music, and over the last couple of years, I've grown to appreciate many genres I never gave a chance before. So I'm going to cop out and just say I'd have to go song by song as to whether I like it or not.

9. Are you registered to vote? Yes.

10. Do you have cable? Yes.

11. Have you ever ridden on a moped? No. I wanna! I wanna!

13. Ever get a parking ticket? Yes.

14. Would you go bungee jumping or sky diving? Probably not. There are too many other things I'd rather do with my time. Like take pictures of other people bungee jumping or sky diving.

15. Furthest place you ever traveled. Vancouver, British Columbia or Niagara Falls, Ontario. Not sure which is farther.

16. Do you have a garden? No way. hahahahahaha! [October 14, 2004 edit: Now I think I might like to have one some day]

17. What's your favorite comic strip? I haven't read comics in years. I'll get back to you if I think of a favorite.

18. Do you really know all the words to your national anthem? I don't know all the words to any songs (even my own!). I'm a dimwit for lyrics.

19. Bath or Shower, morning or night? Shower in the morning (or afternoon on the weekend!). Bath at night, but only rarely.

20. Best movie you've seen in the past month? The only movie I can remember seeing in the past month is Man in the Moon about Andy Kaufman. I don't watch too much TV. And I haven't been to a theater since January: Lord of the Rings.

21. Favorite pizza topping? Pineapple (shush, jeez wink).

22. Chips or popcorn? Fritos Scoops.

24. Have you ever smoked peanut shells? Huh? No.

25. Have you ever been in a beauty pageant? No.

37. Last thing you bought at a pharmacy? Rhinocort (for allergies).

38. Ever throw up in public? I don't think so.

39. Would you prefer being a millionaire or find true love? True Love.

Some things I was thinking about [10/24/02]

[Just Some Stuff]

I always think of lots of things to blog about when I'm driving to work. Then I get to work and I have to work and stuff. By the time my break rolls around, I've forgotten the details I wanted to blog about. *sigh*

I remember some things from this morning, though:
  • one time i went through a drive thru and tried to order a small drink. the fast food person said they didn't have small drinks. they only had medium, large, extra large and jumbo. how can they have a medium drink without a small? couldn't the medium have been small, the large: medium, the extra large: large, and the jumbo: extra large? oh yeah.. and these go to 11.
  • i remember when there was a drink size called "regular."
  • if you've been drinking water all day nonstop at work and at quitting time you have only a very slight urge to pee, go ahead and pee before you leave work to drive home. you won't regret it.

Water, Diet and Exercise [10/23/02]

[Shaping Up]

It's not often that I go into full blown diet and exercise mode. That's hard. I won't make excuses, but I do know I need to eat healthier and exercise more. And even though I don't throw myself into it completely, I try to take little steps when I can make myself. Like right now... I'm trying to be candy bar free (failing today with chocolate covered cherries... yum!), and I'm drinking a lot of water. I find that if I drink a lot of water, I do better. Sometimes that motivates me to do other healthy things. I also walk up three flights of stairs at work a couple times a day. Sometimes more. Yeah.. it's not much, but hell... it's better than nothing.

Anyway... I find it easier to drink a lot of water when I have a water bottle with one of those squirt tops. I'm not sure why. Maybe because it's more fun than drinking the regular way? Or maybe it's less work? Whatever it is... thanks to whoever invented the squirt water bottle. smile

This or That - Television [10/22/02]

[Television]

1. The Cosby Show or A Different World? The Cosby Show

2. Happy Days or Joanie Loves Chachi? Happy Days

3. Cheers or Frasier? Cheers

4. Beverly Hills, 90210 or Melrose Place? Beverly Hills, 90210

5. Real World or Road Rules? Road Rules!!!! Particularly the season with Timmy and Christian. They were a blast! happy

6. Law and Order: SVU or CI? Is this related to CSI: Miami? I really like that show.

7. The Osbournes or The Anna Nicole Show? I've never seen The Osbournes, but I bet I would like it a lot better than The Anna Nicole Show. Although The Anna Nicole Show can be pretty entertaining. Like watching a train wreck, but funny.

8. Diff'rent Strokes or The Facts of Life? Ugh.

9. VeggieTales or 3-2-1 Penguins!? I've never seen either, but I love penguins!!

10. Degrassi or Degrassi: the Next Generation? Huh?

Weird noises in the middle of the night [10/22/02]

[What's Going On?]

Last night, shortly after midnight, something woke me up. I noticed a lot of quick flashes of lightning through the curtains in my bedroom. Then I heard something very strange. It sounded like something(s) scampering around in the attic. I thought it might be a couple of racoons chasing each other. That thought might have freaked me out completely if I owned the duplex, but I was thinking the landlord would have to deal with it. Then I thought I heard something fall down inside the wall, but the scampering continued. Then I heard something in my living room as if someone had a pot and hit it with a spoon. The scampering got a lot louder at that point and I heard things hitting the window. That's when I realized it was hail. Wow. Hail the size of tennis balls or baseballs. Some of the hail was falling down into the fireplace and hitting whatever is in there. That's what that spoon hitting the pot sound was. It lasted for 5-10 minutes. If I hadn't been too tired to get dressed, I would have gone out and collected a couple of chunks and put them in the freezer to marvel at later. Wowzers.

Mmmm... food [10/21/02]

[Food]

I have a can of Pretzel Party Mix. It has peanuts, sesame sticks, poppy seed sticks and pretzel sticks (lotsa sticks!). But I've been eating so much crap lately, and I seem to have a little willpower today, so I'm not going to eat any of it. And I plan to drink water instead of Red Fusion or Coke. Not only do I plan to drink water, but I plan to drink a lot of water. And I won't get a candy bar this afternoon. I declare this afternoon to be candy bar free. No telling what will happen when I get home, though. I have Fritos Scoops and Ranch Dip there. What on earth got into me buying that stuff? Mmmm... fritos and ranch dip. happy

I've got Mail! [10/19/02]

[Mine! | Music]

I got three CDs in the mail today from Javamusic:

PNMSAndrea PerryJon Solo
I'm listening to Project North Meets South right now. smile

I also got my paperwork back from the U.S. Copyright Office for Rose and Blows "Long Road Home" CD. It's just so cool having a copyright. Makes me feel special. smile I wish the CD was on sale, but I can't seem to get a good copy made. I was so disappointed for a while that I quit trying. Then I had a car wreck, bought a new car, my sweet Mandy passed away, and I got Lily. I just haven't had much time to concentrate on CD production. I'll get back to it one of these days.

I got a bill and some other credit card related garbage, too. I wish they would quit sending me those "convenience checks." They're not convenient at all. I'm not going to use them, so I have to shred them. Shredding was fun at first... I mean... who doesn't like to shred stuff? But after shredding 3.5 million "convenience checks," I'm getting a bit bored with it.

Friday Five - Television [10/18/02]

[Television]

friday five
1. How many TVs do you have in your home? Five. One that's hooked up in the living room. One that's hooked up in the bedroom. One that's hooked up in the other bedroom (but not cable ready... it's old!). One that is waiting for a room of it's own (it was my Dad's). And one old black and white one that will run on batteries in an emergency. 2. On average, how much TV do you watch in a week? I hardly ever turn it on except to watch football at this time of year. I sit at my computer 95% of the time and it's hard to watch TV while sitting at my computer. I don't like the TV on unless I'm devoting 100% of my attention to it. I don't "get it" when people talk about having it on for background noise... I'd rather have music or no noise at all.

3. Do you feel that television is bad for young children? No.

4. What TV shows do you absolutely HAVE to watch, and if you miss them, you're heartbroken? None at the moment. Last year, there was "24." Some shows in the past that fit this description are "Cupid," "My So-Called Life," "Once And Again" (but only the first season or two), "X-Files," "Road Rules" (The season with Timmy and Christian was awesome!), the first "Survivor," and "Santa Barbara" (the soap opera).

5. If you had the power to create your own television network, what would your line-up look like? If I was making it just for my own amusement, I'd bring back all the shows that I fell in love with that got canceled in the first season or two. Grrrrrr.

Banana Dance! [10/16/02]

[Linkage]

It's stupid stuff like the banana dance that sometimes bring me right out of slump. haha It's so simple, yet it made me laugh, and I couldn't stop looking at it for quite a while.

I want a new camera! [10/16/02]

[What's Going On?]

nikonI'm going through a big struggle right now. I want a new camera. But dang... I sure don't want the spend the kind of money I would have to spend to get what I want. I started a new thing where I'm posting a picture a day in my picture blog. I was having fun with it, too, but the pictures I'm taking just aren't very high quality. They're okay, but they're not breathtaking. Partly because I'm not much of a photographer, but mostly because I don't have a high quality camera. I started wanting a better camera when I saw Bud Bennett's Flower Pictures. So I've been agonizing over cameras. Today, I finally got practical and made myself stop looking at cameras. I decided I'm not going to give in to my desire. But then Bud posted more pictures! Ack!! I want a good camera!! Waaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!

Lily's Day Care [10/15/02]

[LilyDawg]

When I picked Lily up from Doggy Play Day today, the girl said she did real well with the other dogs. I'm so proud of her. smile Below is a picture of the place. You can see one of the play yards with the blue roof in the back.

Play Day

First day Doggy Play Day [10/15/02]

[LilyDawg]

Today I took Lily Bittersworth to Doggy Play Day. It's day care for dogs. I feel so much better knowing she's with people and other doggies. She's started ripping up carpet and being generally destructive while I'm at work. She's not destructive when I'm home (although she did find one of my shoes to be pretty tasty the other day). So we'll try this for a while. I'm considering sending her to the 2 week intensive training, too. I just don't have what it takes to train her to sit and stay and come and all the things a good doggy does. I have to admit, though, that I cried when I left her at the day care today. I always used to cry whenever I had to leave Mandy at the vet or at my parents house, too. I hope she's having fun with the other little toots. smile

New! Kim's Brown Eyes from Polyaxis [10/13/02]

[Music - My New Releases]

Kim SingingNew Song - Kim's Brown Eyes from Polyaxis
Steve Wood from Polyaxis released his remix of my song "Brown Eyes," and it's a doozy! He starts with a 12 string guitar, adds a deep bass and finishes it off with some rockin' electric guitar. Another one that gave me chills. You can download "Kim's Brown Eyes" on his Polyaxis FreeAudioPlayer page. Woo-Hoo! You can hear all the Brown Eyes covers and remixes on my Remixes and Covers page.

Dream Journal - Roommates [10/12/02]

[Dream Journal]

There's stuff that happened that I can't remember now, but here's what I do remember...

I found out I had to move down the street. I think it was to the duplex next door. It was moving day. I was visiting the duplex I was moving into. I was kind of excited, but then I found out two other girls lived there already. I was talking to a girl that didn't live there even though she was there. She told me who the other two girls were. I realized they were really social, and I figured they probably shared everything no matter who bought it. Since I'm not very social and like what's mine to stay mine, I told that girl that I thought they would probably really hate me. Then I realized one of the girls who I would be living with was in the room and heard me say that. I started to explain why I said that, but then it occured to me to ask if I would have a bedroom to myself. She told me I would be sharing a room with the other girl (who kinda reminded me of Sandra Bullock). That was out of the question. I swore I would never share a bedroom again after college. So I told my Dad [who wasn't my dad in real life] that I couldn't move in there. He was cool and wondered what we needed to do. He asked what city we were in so we could look for another place. I can't remember the name (it's on the tip of my tongue), but the weird thing is that it was the same city as Texas A&M University, but it wasn't College Station. I think it began with a "G". There was a newspaper that I started to look at. Some other man was there and said there was a house available in a nearby city, but I would have to drive on Hwy 6 in the mornings. That would have been awful, so I said no.

Then I was touring the duplex I was supposed to move into with those girls. I saw the room that I would have to share. It was just a bed and a couch kind of thing. I think I would have been on the couch kind of thing. I wondered where all my furniture and my computer would go. I looked around some more.

There was a public bar in the middle of the place. There was also a stage where bands could play. It wasn't huge, but it was there. I asked about it. They said they had to have it in there to be on that street. I asked if I could see the other girl's bedroom. It was on the other side of the bar from where my room would be. We went in there and it was long and dark. But then I realized one wall was only chest high. And it looked over the bar. The girl rang a bell and dropped some change into a bucket that made a loud clang. Something to do with the bar, I guess.

Dream Journal - Major Applewhite [10/12/02]

[Dream Journal]

I just remembered another part of my dream last night.

Major ApplewhiteI went into a shoe store. It wasn't a very popular shoe store in the dream. Not that it was a bad one... just that not many people knew about it. The salesman that started talking to me looked familiar. After I told him that I was just looking, I realized it was Major Applewhite, the wonderful quarterback for the Longhorns from last year. I looked at him and noticed how tall he was (even though his height was supposed to be a problem in getting drafted by the NFL). He started helping some other people.

Discovery Cove is definitely on my list of dream vacations.

What color Yoshi are you? [10/10/02]

[Quiz Results]

I don't like stuff. Okay? [10/09/02]

[About Me]

There are a lot of things I don't like. One of the things I don't like is telling people I don't like something. Ooops... there I go getting hypocritical again. ohwell

Anyway... I just want to not like stuff and not have to justify it or make people understand it or whatever. It kinda goes back to my earlier blog entry about the cafeteria guy. He always makes me tell him I don't want a fountain drink, and I just want to be able to get a bottle drink without the whole fountain drink conversation. Same thing has happened during family holidays all my life. I'm a pretty picky eater, but it never bothers me when people serve stuff I don't like. I just don't eat it. The problem comes up when people want to know *why* I'm not eating it. tongue

Fruit SaladMy Mom used to make all these dishes at Thanksgiving. But I just wanted to eat turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and some black olives. I was very happy just eating that stuff. But someone would invariably ask me if I wanted something else. Like some fruit salad. I'd say, "No thanks." And then I would get, "What? You don't like fruit salad?" Augh! It's just not that simple... I'm sure there are some fruit salads I like, but my Mom liked to put marshmallows in her fruit salad. And sometimes she would put pecans. And I really hate apples in fruit salad, and sometimes it would have apples in it. Or maybe it's that I don't like apples that still have the peel on. Or maybe I like them if they are really crisp granny smith apples. See... it's complicated.

So to honestly answer that question ("You don't like fruit salad?"), I would have had to expound on exactly what I didn't like about the fruit salad. Going into detail about why I don't like what someone cooked is just rude. They think I'm being judgemental when I'm really just answering a question that I didn't want to be asked in the first place. I could have just said, "Yeah... I don't like fruit salad." But then somewhere down the road, I would be caught eating a fruit salad that I do like, and I would be called out for it. "I thought you didn't like fruit salad." Sheesh... then I would have to explain why I like this fruit salad, but not the one at Thanksgiving. tongue

What I really think is that people are just making conversation. But the sad thing is... I like *made* conversation less than I like certain fruit salads. D'oh!

Dream Journal - A Dying Dog [10/08/02]

[Dream Journal]

I realized that I had forgotten to take my dying dog outside to go to the bathroom for a day or two. Probably because I had a new dog, and I'd been house training her. That made me sad. So I took her out (this dream probably happened because I looked at a picture of Mandy right before I went to bed. It was a picture I took the morning before I took her to the vet to be put to sleep). When we were back in, I was talking to my Mom about it (she has passed on in real life, too). She said she hadn't taken the dog out on purpose. That when a dog is close to dying, you shouldn't take him out. You should just leave him close to his log. For some reason, the dog had his own log. I didn't agree with what she was saying about not taking the dog out. Then there were four dogs. I had four treats and wanted them all to have one, but it was kinda hard to hand them out. There were other people there and they wanted to give the treats. But I was afraid they would each give treats to whatever dog they wanted and that all the dogs wouldn't get treats. Especially the one that was dying.

That doesn't really even describe the dream right, but that's the best I can do. I'm going to try to do this more often. Maybe I'll get better at describing dreams.

Stupid Netscape! [10/07/02]

[Blogging n Web Stuff]

I've been having a hard time with my blog today. I mean from a technical standpoint. The template got screwed up twice. I suspect it's because of the Netscape I downloaded. Grrrrrrr....... I've been avoiding Netscape. But my old Netscape at work quit working, so I decided to upgrade it. Since I do html coding, I need to test in different browsers. I haven't been doing that at home because, well.. I guess I'm just a rebel or something.

Anyway... Netscape is very unforgiving when it comes to sloppy html coding or a server that's not set up correctly with it's MIME types or whatever. There are purists who believe that Netscape is better because of that. It forces people to code things perfectly. I would usually be in that camp... who wants slop? But Cripes... html isn't just for professionals anymore... it's for everyday people. With Internet Explorer, a simple little error in the code is okay. With Netscape, a simple error can screw up everything! Like in a stylesheet, you're supposed to use a colon. I accidently used an equal sign for my link colors. That works in Explorer, but not in Netscape.

So what is it that Explorer does that makes things work that don't work in Netscape. And why doesn't Netscape do that, too? Sheesh. Loosen up!

Anyway... I'm pretty sure I opened my blog template in Netscape first thing this morning and that screwed it up. It actually deleted bits of code! I got it all fixed again and not realizing that Netscape did it, I opened the template again later. Same thing! It deleted the same code that it had deleted earlier. So there's some systematic thing that happens with Netscape. I'm not opening it in Netscape again. Stupid Netscape. tongue

My Favorite Movies [10/05/02]

[Lists | Movies]

These are movies I could watch over and over.

AliensAliens
When I went to see this one, I was expecting more of the same horror as it's predecessor, Alien. What I got was one of the best action adventure movies I've ever seen. James Cameron has a way of keeping the audience captivated until the very end. Having a woman in the lead role without making it blatantly sexual scored big points with me. There are some cool scenes added to the special edition... like when Ripley finds out what happened to her daughter while she was deep in space after encountering the first alien.

Niagara, NiagaraNiagara, Niagara
This movie caught my eye at Blockbuster video not too long after I visited Niagara Falls. I thought it was cool that it had Henry Thomas (the boy from E.T.) in it. Turned out to be one of my favorite movies ever. It makes me cry like a baby. Kind of a misfit love story from the makers of Sling Blade. The soundtrack is awesome, too, with songs by Patty Griffin, Cowboy Junkies and even one by Henry Thomas.

Breakfast ClubBreakfast Club
This could be the first movie I ever saw multiple times at the theater. I guess I have a soft spot in my heart for high school stories. I even got addicted to the soundtrack. I love that song by Simple Minds, "Don't You (Forget About Me)." I remember when I was off at college, my Mom took all the posters off the walls in my room back home. The next time I went home, as an act of rebellion, I put one poster back up. My "The Breakfast Club" movie poster.

Happy Birthday Mom [10/03/02]

[About Me]

MomToday would be my mother's 71st birthday if she was still alive. I was trying to remember what year she died. I think it was 1995. I'm so bad with dates. I remember it was November 5, but I don't remember what year. It always amazes me when people can remember the year something happened. I remember I graduated high school in 1982, but that's because it was etched in my memory back then. You know... "We're the class of '82!" I've also somehow committed my family members' birth years to memory. My mom was 1931, my dad was 1925, and my brother was 1950.

Back to my Mom... People who knew her say I look like her.

Just give me what I want [10/02/02]

[Human Observation]

I have a mild rant. It's about people who can't accept one's simple every day choices. I understand "they are just trying to help," but I don't want help. I want to make choices and not have to justify them. 'kay....

There's a guy who runs the cafeteria downstairs where I work. I try to avoid his checkout line because he always gives me a bit of a hassle because I don't get a fountain drink. It's free, but I don't want it. The lunch special is a main course, two vegetables, bread and a fountain drink. But I want a bottled drink. I'd explain to you why, but that's my point... I don't have to explain! I'm willing to pay extra for it with absolutely no complaint. So why do I have to put up with this:

Cafeteria guy: You know that comes with a fountain drink, don't you?
Me: Yes. I wanted a bottled drink.
Cafeteria guy: Have you tried our fountain drinks?
Me: Yes. I really just want a bottled drink.
Cafeteria guy: Our fountain drinks are really quite good.
Me: Thanks. I like bottled drinks.
Cafeteria guy: Okay.

It happens every time! The guy is mostly blind, so I don't get irritated about the fact that he doesn't recognize me as the lady who doesn't want a fountain drink. But sheesh... I just want to buy my lunch without the same hassle every time.

One time I decided I would get a bottled drink and a cup of ice. I put the lid on the cup of ice so it would look like I was getting my "free fountain drink." I figured it would make him happy. Nope... he still didn't like it that I was getting the bottled drink. Augh!

What's your soul type? [10/02/02]

[Quiz Results]

down to earth
I'm completely down-to-earth! Find your soul type at kelly.moranweb.com.

You are the most in touch with knowledge. It's the tree of life from which you tap the sap. You know what you want and you know how to reasonably get it.

Virtues: You respect people with plans. When someone has their head on their shoulders, you know that they can see straightforward and keep their eyes on the mark. When it comes to looking at the future, you take a logical approach: what's within your ability? A fortunate attribute that you have is the ability to set a goal for yourself, higher than maybe you feel possible, but still keep yourself within reasonable bounds. You take the time to appreciate those surrounding you and they do appreciate you in return. Decision-making comes naturally to you when you take the time to consider each option. People only come to talk to you when they are looking for a logical, reasonable solution.

Aspirations: You have an idea of what you can do with your life, but you push it up a notch. You need a profession that you can enjoy, so work towards it. You want to live near your friends and family while being as far away as possible. You also want to settle down while working in excitement and variation.

Quirks: You don't appreciate drama queens and they don't appreciate you. When they need help, they won't seek you out because of your ability to see through their overly dramatic predicaments. You have leeway for humor, and sometimes love to participate in it, but when it becomes irrational behavior, others can count you out. Loud noises are bothersome, except when they come from you or your friends.

Factors: Reach for the sky! Don't decide to do something because you're merely good at it, but choose something you might like to do, despite whether you're sure you can master it or not. Don't only save room for a few empathetic friends, but open up to everyone.

Future: When looking for a job, if you work in all of your talents (logic, decision-making, planning, and definitely humor), you'll find yourself happy. Come to a compromise for location; live nearby your friends and take periodic vacations or live farther away and take frequent return trips.
